Are the mushrooms the latest beauty obsession ?
Although mushrooms have been used for centuries for their ability to improve health and maintain a youthful appearance they have only been introduced in skincare products recently. So what is so fabulous about this fungi?

Let’s look into the type of mushrooms most commonly used in skincare and their benefits:

How to balance oily skin?

Having oily skin isn’t necessarily the problem as your skin needs oil , but an excess of it is less appealing.
You can get rid of oily skin entirely, but keeping the shine under control is totally possible. Understanding your skin is essential in managing the oiliness and restoring a healthy complexion that looks radiant.
The skin produces an oil called sebum that works to lubricate the skin and prevent dryness and dehydration.
Here is how to tackle over production of sebum and reduce the likelihood of breakouts:
🔴 Use salicylic acid as this helps breakdown excess oil and minimises blackheads and blemishes
🔴 Avoid sugar and dairy products as they increase oil production
🔴Consider wearing mineral foundation as they won’t clog your pores
🔴Avoid using harsh products as they tend to strip the skin and trigger excess oil production
🔴Check your hormones as imbalanced oil levels are caused by fluctuations with the androgen hormones

What is pollution doing to your skin and how to tackle this?

The increase of air pollution over the past years has had major effects on our skin. Environmental pollutants affect the skin as it is the outermost barrier and damage the skin by generating free radicals, inflammation and DNA damage. This contributes significantly to the development of fine lines and wrinkles, irregular pigmentation and inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea .
Not only are we breathing in pollution every day, but it is also sitting on our skin compromising its barrier.

But how can we best tackle the damage?

Firstly, it is essential to ensure you double cleanse at night to remove all impurities and make-up from the skin . Second, layer the skin with antioxidants ( vitamins, resveratrol. Ferulic acid) to protect against pollution.
If you suffer with inflammatory skin conditions, ensure you incorporate hydrating ingredients in your skincare routine.
And ultimately, wear an SPF as it is the number one defense against the harmful effects of uv rays and pollution.

Stretch marks

Stretch marks or striae are very common (estimated 90% suffer with it) and appear when there is rapid stretching or shrinking of the skin . This causes the collagen bundles underneath the skin to tear away from each other.
Stretch marks can be purple, red, pink or brown in colour . They usually start over darker but fade over time. They are more common on the tummy, breast, arms, legs, buttocks and hips .

But what are the most common causes of stretch marks?
They are often caused by sudden growth or weight loss and women are most likely to get them during pregnancy . Rarely stretch marks can be caused by Cushing’s syndrome, a condition that causes the body to produce too much cortisol.

How can stretch marks be treated ?
While there is no guarantee to get rid of the stretch marks completely, there are treatments that can be used to reduce their appearance such as radiofrequency, chemical peels , laser, microneedling and carboxytherapy.
Topical treatments with hyaluronic acid and tretinoin may help with early stretch marks if applied regularly .

Why is it important to exfoliate?

Have you ever wondered why it is important to exfoliate and what type of exfoliation you should use?

The word exfoliation comes from the Latin word exfoliare (to strip off) and involves the removal of dead skin cells from the skin surface. This can be achieved by mechanical (scrubs, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning ) or chemical way (AHA – BHA acids) or a combination of both.

Exfoliating the skin improves skin texture, better absorption of skincare products, unclogs pores, reduces signs of ageing and prevents breakouts.

How often should you exfoliate? For very sensitive and oily skin types with acne, ask for a dermatologist's advice.

- Normal skin 2/week
- Oily skin – 2/week
- Sensitive skin 1/week
- Mature skin 2-3 / week
- Dry skin 2-3 times/ week

Is chocolate good for your skin?

Chocolate has always been stigmatised for causing spots. But is our favourite sweet really the cause of blemishes ? Could it be the sugar, the fat or the chemicals used to create chocolate the cause of it?
The link between acne and diet has always been controversial, but here is the good news for chocolate lovers. Recent scientific studies indicate that chocolate play a role in preventing skin damage and may help protect against UV rays. This is due to the fact that cocoa beans are rich in antioxidants compounds called flavanols. Though found in abundance in raw cocoa bean, these flavanols are often mostly destroyed during the conventional chocolate making process.
A new method called Acticoa has been developed to retain the naturally occurring flavanols with significant skin and health benefits

Bioavailability.

Bioavailability refers to the extent to a substance or drug becomes completely available to its intended biological destination.
Many medications and supplements that are administered orally have different bioavailability due to how the drug is made or its dosage form.

There are several factors that affect our body’s ability to absorb nutrients in the stomach. These factors include age, metabolism, health status, genetics, interactions with other products we
consume, and the physical and chemical makeup of the nutritional supplement or food.

When vitamins are given intravenously, they bypass the gut and liver, making the bioavailability
almost 100% compared to 20-30% when taken orally.

Book in with our nurse specialist to discuss intravenous vitamin infusions.

Epigenetics

Approximately only 25% of the way we age is down to genes. This suggests that environmental and
lifestyle factors play a major role in longevity and how our brain is shaped.

Environment, specific diet and lifestyle interventions may reverse epigenetic ageing in healthy
adults. Family studies demonstrated that about 25% of the variations in human longevity is due to
genetic factors. Our environment is one of the key determinants of mental health, physical health
and longevity. The quality of our relationships, our social environment, diet and other such as
psychosocial factors play a major role in the quality of our health.

Book in to find other further information about the epigenetic testing and ways we can help you
enhance longevity.

Rosacea

The cause of rosacea is not fully understood. Your genetics, immune system factors, and environmental factors may all play a part. Rosacea is fairly common, especially in women aged 40 to 60 years, even more so in fair skin types.

This is a chronic skin condition that can look very similar to acne, but may need a different form of treatment. Affected people often suffer with an increased number of thread veins, tiny raised red bumps or acne type pustules.

Common triggers include :
🔴 sun exposure
🔴 spicy food
🔴 hot baths
🔴 topical steroids
🔴 wrong type of skincare

There’s no cure for it but it can be kept under control by using the right skincare, together with redness-reducing light treatments like laser, IPL and LED red light therapy can minimise the appearance of it.
