On Wednesday, we visited the Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art with our Connect and Do team to explore the incredible work of Christina Mackie, and what a fantastic afternoon it was!

We immersed ourselves in contemporary art, shared plenty of conversation, and enjoyed discovering the exhibition together. It was a brilliant chance to connect creatively, and we’re excited to share a few photos from the day.

Some believe pineapples are an important part of Stockwell’s story, and to celebrate this unique slice of local history, we are looking for artists to create pineapple-themed art for our forthcoming Connect & Do exhibition! 🍍

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

We’re so excited to get hands-on this Wednesday at our weekly Blooming Marvellous community allotment project where our Hounslow Community meet for an afternoon of gardening.

Blooming Marvellous is now in its second year and supports people with learning disabilities and autistic people to garden alongside members of the local community, growing their own produce and planting a sensory herb garden.

But the group is much more about growing vegetables; it supports:

• Mental Wellbeing: Finding peace and purpose in the outdoors.
• Social Connection: Breaking down barriers and building friendships through shared goals.
• Skill Building: Learning everything from horticulture to teamwork in a supportive environment.

Last Friday was World Down Syndrome Day and we want to share the incredibly talented collective Drag Syndrome, a troupe of drag queens and kings who have performed at the Tate Modern, Glastonbury Festival, and even locations in Berlin, Sweden, and the US!

We are especially proud to spotlight Lady Francesca (Francis), a member of the group and someone we support in Hammersmith & Fulham.

Certitude prides itself on supporting everyone to be fully themselves, and to live the life they want, championing individuals who challenge the status quo and bring unique perspectives to the arts and beyond.

Francis’s creativity and stage presence serve as a powerful reminder that when barriers are removed, people have the space to express who they are. He is a star in our eyes, and on the stage!

The Timms Review steering group wants to hear from you on the future of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The group is co-producing the first ever full review of PIP, with disabled people at its heart.

Today, the group is launching the first step in their inclusive and accessible engagement - a Call for Evidence on a range of issues related to PIP. They will be sharing information on more ways to get involved soon.

We are getting ready for our Certitude Neurodiversity Celebration Week event ‘Celebrating Neurodivergent Women’, and we are excited to welcome our guest speaker Neurodiversity Consultant Emma Allsopp.

Ahead of the event we asked her why statistics are still showing underdiagnosis of neurodiversity in women;

“Our current reliance on singular diagnostic tools and labelling - one condition at a time - can lead to misdiagnosis or even mono-diagnosis, because it ignores how neurodiversity interconnects with other conditions as well as hormonal changes. We need a more nuanced approach to diagnostics to better understand and support neurodivergent women throughout their lives.”

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a global initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences, and we’re excited to be part of it.

This month’s Hounslow Job Club is a great chance for the people we support in Hounslow to get practical help with their job search.

Join us at 106 Brabazon Community Centre, TW5 9LT on Tuesday 24 March, 11am–1pm.

We’ll be helping people who are actively looking for work with CV writing, job searching, current applications, interview skills, and setting up accounts on job search platforms. Getting the right support at the right time can make a huge difference when someone is trying to find a job.

Thank you Learning Disability England for such an inspiring and energising conference!

Members of our wider Certitude community, including people we support, family members, and colleagues, recently attended the ‘Being Seen, Being Heard’ event. The day was all about people having their voices heard and being fully part of their communities.

Gerard, who we support, told us the day was “really positive and inspiring”. He especially enjoyed hearing from people who have shared their stories on TV and radio, written books, become actors, and spoken publicly about their achievements.

Seeing others reach their goals helped Gerard feel even more confident in his own abilities. He said the event was “eye-opening” and reminded him that everyone has talents to share, and that by speaking up, being involved, and connecting with others can open up new opportunities.

Learning Disability England brings people and organisations together to create a real movement for change, where people with learning disabilities, families, friends, and supporters all work alongside each other as equals.

At Certitude, we remain committed to doing our part and are currently working on a new Environment Strategy to reduce our impact on the environment which will include encouraging people to switch off their equipment, using more efficient technology and partnering with suppliers who use more renewable sources.
