Are You Breathing at the Right Rate? 🌬️

Breathing is simple, but doing it optimally can make all the difference in your energy, focus, and overall health. Here’s what healthy breathing looks like:

🔹 Relaxed Rhythm: Each breath should be the same size and through your nose.

🔹 Healthy Rate: Aim for 10-12 breaths per minute in a calm state.

🔹 Controlled Volume:
* Women: ~400mls per breath
* Men: ~500mls per breath
🚨 Check Your Chest!

If your upper chest is moving significantly, your breaths might be too big. Shift your focus to smaller, smoother breaths for optimal oxygen use.

Take a moment today to notice your breath—how does it compare to these healthy guidelines?

Breathe Better, Live Better 🌬️

Did you know your diaphragm is the MVP of optimal breathing? Breathing from the lower chest (your diaphragm) not only helps your lungs fill more efficiently but also keeps you energised for longer.

Here’s why diaphragmatic breathing is key:

👉Stronger muscles: The diaphragm is built to withstand fatigue, unlike the smaller muscles in your upper chest.

👉Better lung capacity: It expands your ribcage more effectively, allowing air to fill your lungs uniformly.

👉Less strain: Neck and shoulder muscles should only kick in for high oxygen demand situations—not everyday breathing.

Signs you’re breathing optimally:

✔️ Lower ribcage moves gently outward on inhalation
✔️ Abdomen expands slightly as you inhale
✔️ Chest stays still
✔️ Minimal neck and shoulder movement

Take a moment to check your breathing—are you using your diaphragm or relying too much on upper chest muscles? Start making the switch today for a calmer, more efficient breath.

Are You Breathing Right? 🌬️

Breathing is something we do every moment without thinking—but are you doing it optimally? Let’s break it down!

4 Characteristics of Optimal Breathing
Starting with the first key step: Breathe through your nose!

👉 Why Nose Breathing Matters:

*Acts as a natural filter to remove allergens and pollutants.
*Warms and humidifies the air for smoother lung function.
*Reduces the risk of respiratory infections.
*Enhances oxygen uptake, giving your body the fuel it needs.

Switching from mouth to nose breathing might seem simple, but it can have profound effects on your overall health. Start today and breathe better!

Have you noticed a difference when you focus on nose breathing? Share your thoughts below!

Ever wondered why some people suddenly feel breathless, dizzy, or experience tingling sensations when they’re stressed or anxious? It might be hyperventilation syndrome—a condition that disrupts the balance of carbon dioxide in your blood.
While it’s often triggered by anxiety or stress, hyperventilation can lead to uncomfortable symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, and confusion, making everyday tasks challenging.

Key Takeaways:
* Hyperventilation disrupts blood chemistry, affecting your body and mind.
* Managing it involves breathing retraining, stress reduction, and expert guidance from respiratory physiotherapists.
* A Breathing MOT can provide personalised advice and exercises to improve your breathing health.

Who Is the Breathing MOT For?

Our comprehensive breathing assessments are designed for individuals who struggle to control their breathing or suspect they may have a Breathing Pattern Disorder (BPD).

With anxiety levels on the rise, an astounding 8 million people in the UK experience symptoms at any given time. This significantly impacts work-related absences, and there is a strong connection between anxiety and over-breathing, one form of BPD.

The Breathing MOT is tailored to detect breathing pattern abnormalities early, equipping you with the tools to prevent BPD or effectively diagnose and treat it. Take control of your breathing and your well-being today.

When working with clients, it is important closely monitor their breathing patterns during the session. Is it Nose, Low, and Slow?

Pay special attention to:
* Intermittent gasps or yawns
* Upper chest movement
* Mouth breathing
* Posture

Consider performing a 1-minute BPAT (see our previous post for details) to assess their breathing more effectively.

Identifying Susceptibility to BPD in Your Clients…

During your subjective assessment, be mindful of signs that may indicate a predisposition to Breathing Pattern Disorders (BPD):

Medical History/Underlying Conditions:

* Asthma, COPD, or Bronchiectasis
* Hayfever, sinus issues, or a deviated septum
* Recent or recurrent chest infections, pneumothorax
* Chronic pain
* POTS, hypermobility, or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
* Long COVID

Recent History:

* Any recent issues related to breathing, such as a virus, cough, or COVID?
* Is the client experiencing pain or stress that could lead to breath-holding or tension?
* Are there any current breathing symptoms?
* How do these symptoms present?
* What aggravates or eases the symptoms, and how long do they take to settle?

Careful observation of these factors can provide valuable insights into your client’s susceptibility to BPD. Book an appointment with our breathing specialists via www.thebreathingmot.com
