Today we’re sharing an extraordinary photo from our team at HCA UK at University College Hospital, taken as part of in internal submission for a team photo that represents the nursing profession.

“This photo represents each of us as a vital piece of a larger puzzle. When we come together, we form something extraordinary, a powerful team committed to high-quality, patient-focused care. Each day, we strive to be kind, bold, and driven in every decision we make, always keeping our patients at the centre of all we do.” - Alvaro Alla, Charge Nurse at UCH

“At HCA UK at UCH, we care for patients with some of the most complex conditions, including haematology, oncology, and stem cell transplants. This level of care demands not only highly skilled and knowledgeable nurses, but also a truly compassionate and collaborative multidisciplinary team. Each member contributes something unique, not only through their clinical expertise but also by bringing a piece of themselves into their everyday work.

This image reflects that unity, care, and shared dedication. "The force of a team is not just in the strength of its individuals, but in the unity of their purpose."

We would like to say a special thank you to all of our teams who are dedicated to the care and improvement of human life.

💧 What is hydrotherapy and how can it support neuro rehabilitation?

At our neuro rehab centre at The Wellington Hospital, hydrotherapy is more than just exercise in water. It’s a carefully guided therapy using physiotherapy techniques in a heated pool to support rehabilitation after injury, surgery and many other complex neurological conditions.

Whether a patient is recovering from an accident or regaining mobility after a stroke, the benefits of our hydropool provide a powerful environment for safe, supported movement.

🎥Meenal Dhir, Lead Physiotherapist at The Wellington Hospital talks us through our hydropool and shares how we’re helping patients through their neuro rehabilitation journey.

Celebrating World Embryologist Day 🌍

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible work of embryologists and shining a spotlight on one of our own at HCA Healthcare UK's The Lister Fertility Clinic.

Joining our team of 18 embryologists last year at Lister Fertility Clinic, Camilla has already made an amazing impact in the lab. Here she shares with us what her day-to-day looks like as an embryologist, what she enjoys most about her role and what people may find the most surprising!

“Our work varies depending on the lab rotation. The mornings typically see us checking embryos and updating patients on their embryo development, carrying out egg retrievals, fresh embryo transfers, biopsying blastocyst for genetic testing, preparing semen for inseminations and freezing eggs and embryos.

The afternoons are when we do the inseminations (fertilizing eggs by either doing IVF or ICSI), frozen embryo transfers, freezing of any additional embryos that develop throughout the day and of course admin.

People often don’t realise just how much responsibility we carry, or how precise and emotionally invested we are. We work almost entirely behind the scenes, working in total focus for hours in the lab. We have very little margin for error, almost everything we do is double witnessed and our attention to detail is at the highest level possible.

We are emotionally invested in all our patient cycles, regardless of whether it is their first cycle with us or third. While we celebrate successes, we understand that our work dramatically impacts the hopes of our patients, and we feel the heartache when outcomes aren’t what we hoped.

I am so passionate about the field of fertility, and I absolutely love what I do; having the ability to make a positive impact in people’s lives, makes being an embryologist such a privilege.”

Thank you to Camilla and all of our embryologists at HCA UK for your dedication and support to all of our patients.

“My father had a history of heart disease. He was probably a bit overweight, ate the wrong things and didn’t do much exercise. I eat well and move a lot and thought that would give me a “get out of jail free” card.”

Steven, 58, was incredibly aware of the need to be healthy as a result of heart problems in his family history, so consequently was incredibly focused on keeping himself on top form.

Despite his efforts, following a health screen as part of his corporate package from work, a few concerns were noted. His cholesterol and blood pressure were slightly raised, with the latter linked to the jaw ache he had been experiencing, which is a common symptom of cardiac issues.

After a recommendation to see a cardiologist, Steven booked an appointment with Dr Oliver Guttmann at The Wellington Hospital.

Further tests and scans arranged by Dr Guttmann revealed significant blockages and coronary artery disease. Due to the severity of the condition, Steven remained as an inpatient and was then admitted for surgery, performed by Dr Guttmann and Mr Dincer Aktuerk.

“I was up on a stepladder doing some DIY when I heard a crunch in my hip”

As a keen runner who kept himself fit and active, Darryck, in his late 40s, didn’t have any health worries. But everything changed when he suddenly felt an intense pain in his hip while working on his house.

He powered through for months by adjusting and adapting his lifestyle but deep down, he knew it wasn’t sustainable.

After a less-than-reassuring initial consultation elsewhere, Darryck met Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Giles Stafford at The Wellington Hospital.

“Giles talked me through the operation, he looked at my X-rays, he explained the issues I had, he wondered how I’d been going so long on my bad hip! He gave me the comfort that surgery was the right thing to do.”

🔗Read Darryck’s story and learn how his hip was rebuilt with state-of-the-art ceramic implants, resulting in him walking without crutches just days later and soon back on the golf course. https://www.hcahealthcare.co.uk/patient-and-visitor-information/patient-information/patient-stories/getting-back-to-the-fairway-darrycks-hip-replacement?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Referral+&utm_campaign=Orthopaedics&utm_content=Darryck
