The link between gut health and obesity is rapidly becoming the holy grail of weight management. There are still plenty of discrepancies in available studies but one thing is certain...

Data has shown that alterations in the bacterial composition or diversity in the gut are generally associated with changes in the metabolic profiles of the microbiota, thus influencing host health.

Remember that 90% of the metabolic functions in our body are performed by bacteria. Functions like carb and fat absorption, certain hormone production like those that control appetite or blood sugar levels or those that make us feel happy.

It's all so complex and we have only scratched the surface. The human microbiota is the most fascinating and exciting subject I have ever come across.

One of my favourite quick meals... My take on potato rosti with a side of veg🥔yumm

🍠Rosti: grate potatoes and then use a muslin cloth to squeeze out the liquid. Mix with grated zuchini/carrot or cabbage. Add Nutritional yeast, some chickpea flour, garlic and herbs (or anything else you like). Pat into flat patties and roast in oven for 15 mins on 180 degrees c

🥬Add any side veg. I water sautéed some red and white cabbage with some onions, turmeric, organic maple syrup, salt and lime juice.

I sprinkled some fresh foraged wild garlic over the top...

It's delicious👌
It's anti-inflammatory 👌
It's loaded with nutrients 👌
It's full of gut feeding fibre👌
It's quick, easy and wholesome 👍

Above is an oversimplified but very important fact....
We can attribute many a low mood, slow mood, sad mood and angry mood to the state of our gut.
Irritability, anxiety, depression and mood instability CAN be because of a gut that is seriously imbalanced, inflamed or damaged.
There just simply are not enough of the good guys to keep the bad under control or in turn to keep up with the demand of essential nutrients, vitamins and hormones.

Eating wholefoods that are rich in fiber, eating fresh and raw alongside cooked and limiting 'bad' foods is key to maintaining this balance.

It's a complex issue though and at times requires special healing protocols and supplements too.

I'm not a morning person, never have been, but it doesn't take much more than water to wake me up!

💦Hydration after a night's rest is key

💙Something soothing and gentle on the stomach lining is helpful

Ideally, when there is hormonal balance, cortisol is high upon waking up... It's actually what helps you wake up... So having caffeinated drinks can raise that cortisol higher than necessary.

Cortisol is a stress hormone that has detrimental effects when its levels are high for extended periods of time.... Days, weeks, even years...

✔️Be gentle on your system after all that detoxing and regeneration it applied during sleep.
✔️Help flush those toxins, hydrate your kidneys and adrenals and allow your body to wake up naturally to get those cogs turning efficiently.

⚠️If you need caffeinated or sugary beverages to wake up, you may have hormonal imbalance!

Talking about inflammation...
Here is a wonderfully anti-inflammatory meal under 30mins to prepare and won't break the bank...and did I mention it's delicious?! 🍴

✔️Dry roasted yams
✔️Maroccan spiced chickpeas
✔️Tahini dressing
✔️Fresh coriander salad

The number one anti-inflammatory component here is the healthy amount of fibre!!
Fibre feeds beneficial bacteria in the gut and promotes the production of butyrate which is the best anti-inflammatory agent your gut could have!

Fibre is therefore a prebiotic and so essential for health in general... It also helps remove excess cholesterol, absorbs excess oestrogen and removes it from the body, therefore promoting hormonal health and a healthy weight.

100g of chickpeas contain 17g Fibre, 100g of yams contain 4g....women need at least 28g a day (some say 40g is better) .... So this meal is perfect.

➡️Physics- The reinforcement or prolongation of sound by reflection from a surface or by the synchronous vibration of a neighboring object
➡️Mechanics- The condition in which an electric circuit or device produces the largest possible response to an applied oscillating signal, a condition in which an object or system is subjected to an oscillating force having a frequency close to its own natural frequency

Thats what this salad is... 8 cups! Kale, zucchini, red onion, carrots, red cabbage, chickpeas, peppers and an avo/tahini dressing.

Studies are showing that with each generation born, the diversity of gut microbes is decreasing. This is due to modern lifestyle and diet.

There are some very cost effective ways to optimise or maintain the health of your microbiome.

On average, people on western diets only eat a variety of about 15 plant foods. Corn, wheat and soy being at the top but unfortunately these form parts of highly processed foods that are nutrient poor.

Some say our ancestors ate around 50 different types of plant foods... Some experts suggest right up to 100, depending on the geographical location.

Microbes live in us and on us. We cannot live without them.

✳️Beneficial microbes play very important roles in our body... From making vitamins and other key nutrients, to communicating with our immune system and manufacturing certain hormones.

✳️Our genes hold the codes for the manufacturing of enzymes and proteins that form, shape and give function to our cells. So do the genes of these microbes!

✳️It is estimated that humans have between 20 000 to 25 000 genes.... The microbes in your body add an additional 3000 000.
Bacterial cells outnumber ours 10 to 1.
Therefore, microbes are responsible for up to 90% of our metabolic functions!

🤯Mind blowing to say the least.

So when it comes to a gut microbiome imbalance or gut dysbiosis... We are only Starting to understand the magnitude and reaches of that impact.

Sweetened, but not too sweet as I don't like sweet breakfasts, with maple syrup and mashed bananas🍌🍁
Has Gf oats, buckwheat, seeds and coconut flakes...
I pair it with well cultured slightly sour coconut yogurt 🤤
