Researchers studied the link between smoking and back pain using data from over 438,000 people in the UK. They found that:

- Smoking increases the risk of developing back pain.
- Current smokers had a 50% higher risk of back pain compared to non-smokers.
- Former smokers also had an increased risk, but lower than current smokers.
- The more ci******es smoked per day and the longer someone smoked, the higher their back pain risk.
- Women who smoke seem to be at even greater risk than men who smoke.
- Quitting smoking or reducing how much you smoke could lower your chances of developing back pain.

The researchers suggest several reasons smoking may lead to back pain, including:
- Damage to bones and discs in the spine
- Changes in how the body perceives pain
- Mental health effects that can worsen pain

While the study can’t prove smoking directly causes back pain, it provides strong evidence of a link between the two. The findings highlight another potential health benefit of quitting smoking or never starting.

The London Marathon 2024 is finally here.
As a leading Physiotherapy clinic in West London, we have helped countless people prepare for and recover from the London Marathon over the years.

If you are lining up tomorrow - congratulations and well done. We wish you the very best.

Here are some tips to help you:

Warm-Up Right
A proper warm-up increases blood flow, activates muscles, and reduces injury risk. Perform 10-15 mins of light cardio like walking/jogging, then dynamic stretches like leg swings, walking lunges, etc. Studies show this reduces muscle strain and improves endurance.

Post-Race Recovery
The 24-48 hours after a marathon are crucial. Refuel with carbs and protein within 30 mins to replenish depleted glycogen stores and repair muscle damage. Stretch and use a foam roller to relieve tightness.
Get a sports massage 2-3 days post-race to flush out lactic acid.

Common Niggles
Knee Pain is a common complaint post marathon. See a physio if persists more than a week or 2.

Plantar Fasciitis and IT Band Syndrome: are also very common
Taking time to stretch and light strength training muscle activation are usually sufficient but contact a Physiotherapist if needed.

A few weeks ago nominated me to but with all the skipping I was doing I developed an Achilles tendinopathy so had to back off on high impact training. A couple of months ago I also scored a half century on my birth certificate, so I’ve been upping the strength training including loading my Achilles progressively.

As a physio who likes to treat her patients holistically, I have to acknowledge my own increased injury risk factors e.g hormonal changes, auto-immune issues so I know I have to train smart if I want to continue training at all.

Not going to lie, it’s been boring as hell not running or skipping (and some days even walking was bloody painful). However, I’m a great believer in doing ANY kind of training and mixing things up when I’m injured (hence the hula hooping last month🤪)
So this morning I got up determined to go for a run and despite it being the slowest 5k I’ve run in maybe 25 years - my cadence was off, my breathing was out but...it felt bloody amazing!💪🏾😊

STAY AT HOME...and learn something new!
Aside from learning to hula hoop 😂I’ve been working on my tech skills and all things SEO. These are challenging times for all small businesses and that includes independent private physiotherapy practices. Improving online visibility seemed like a logical step with the advent of video consultations.

STAY AT HOME...and treat your patients.
Like most physiotherapists, when lockdown was enforced I worried not only about how it would affect my livelihood but also how it was impacting my patients.
We’ve all heard the noise surrounding the on-going spats in the physio world about manual therapy versus rehab/S&C, and who’s best. I have also seen some disappointingly divisive posts from physiotherapists during lockdown (*eye-roll)...
My hands are the tools of my trade, as are my knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and all that other good stuff. I also view good/active listening skills as fundamental to my practice.
This isn’t meant to be a ‘humble brag’ post but a means of highlighting the importance of our soft skills to support our patients through these unprecedented times.
