When the rage comes, it’s hard to control.

What you need in that moment is to pause and detach from the situation which has triggered your anger.

It’s this pause which will allow the fire inside you to burn itself out.

One technique that has worked for many of my clients when the red mist descends is to imagine they are being filmed and live streamed to everyone you know.

People tend to behave in an “ideal” way when they have an audience and this gives you the pause to see what the ideal outcome to the situation is and what you have to do, in terms of your behaviour, to create the outcome you want.

It’s not about never feeling angry. You will. And you should. Anger is part of being human. Some situations justify anger.

It is simply about managing and expressing that anger better.

If something was on fire in your garden, you would not try to put it out with petrol. That would only make the problem a lot worse.

That’s binge eating or drinking when we are sad or stressed or having a rubbish day.

You think it will make you feel better - and for an hour or so, it might - but afterwards you are even more stressed and sad, with the added bonus of a food or drink hangover, lethargy and self-loathing.

It’s understandable. We don’t like feeling bad. So we try to numb those bad feelings with food or drink.

What we need to do is learn to self soothe (find a comforting activity to do) whilst simply feeling the “bad” emotion, however uncomfortable.

Experiencing these emotions, just as you would the good feelings, means you will become more resilient and able to navigate life without using food or alcohol as a crutch.

If only there was a button in your brain which could switch your thoughts off? Especially those dark and disturbing ones or the ones which repetitively turn up to torture us.

But if you’ve ever tried to stop your thoughts, you also know it’s a futile pursuit.

In fact, the more you try not to stop certain thoughts, the more your brain sends them.

There simply is no “off” button.

But you can turn the volume down on those thoughts so they are like an untuned radio in the nextdoor room. Or graffiti on the wall.

To turn the volume down, you need simply to accept that the thoughts are there, rather than fighting them.

Counterintuitively, the more you passively let the thoughts be, the quieter they will become. So stop fighting.

You know that voice in your head which constantly points out every possible danger scaring you about what might go wrong (no matter how unrealistic and outlandish those apparent dangers are)?

Anxiety will try to scare you into narrowing down your life, into cutting more and more things out, spreading unease.

Wishing the voice would stop, fighting it, makes you feel worse: it’s futile, exhausting.

Counterintuitively, it’s better to simply turn the volume down on the voice, using the techniques in this post. 

Then, simply let the voice drone on in the background whilst you get on with life.

The more you let the voice be, the quieter it will become.

So stop fighting.

If your brain catastrophises about whether you will get to sleep, you have sleep anxiety.

A great way to fight it is to find a mantra to repeat back to the catastrophising thoughts (rather than entering into a dialogue with the anxious thoughts where you torture yourself with worst case scenarios).

The problem is that the more you tell yourself that you “must” get to sleep, that you “won’t cope” if you don’t get sleep, the more pressure you feel, the more anxious you feel, and the more your brain resists sleep.

Take the pressure off by repeatedly saying one of these mantras to yourself before bed and, once you are in bed, focus only on the mantra and how good it feels to be resting that body in your cosy bed. This way, you’ll reset how your brain thinks about sleep.

Panic attacks are frightening. Heart racing, feels like you are dying, feels it will never end, you are desperate to escape.

You expend so much mental energy fighting to make it stop by avoiding the places, activities and people you love.

But it’s futile to fight a panic attack. It just makes the panic worse. And it’s so exhausting.

Counter intuitively, it’s better to stop fighting. Stop narrowing down your life and accept the panic attack might happen.

Welcome it as you would an old friend person you’ve bumped into. Ah, hello again.

Stop fighting.

Does your brain sending cravings urging you to binge eat whenever you see sweet foods like chocolate?

You are not alone.

The compulsion to binge on that chocolate can make you feel completely out of control.

But a binge always ends the same way: lethargy, bloating, regret and self loathing.

When the cravings start, you need to tell your brain a new message to replace the old binge message. Repeat it like a mantra. Deciding not to binge might feel weird and uncomfortable for a couple weeks.

But it will be worth it because you will retrain your brain that you do not binge on chocolate and it will stop sending the cravings.

Imagine that. No willpower needed.

You don’t have to listen and obey every thought your brain sends you (after all, if we all obeyed every thought our brains sent, we’d all be in prison and the world would be an unliveable place).

Sometimes those thoughts and urges are just brain junk.

So be discerning about the thoughts you follow through on and the thoughts you ignore. Sit with the cravings or the urge rather than do it. Be uncomfortable for a while.

Think about where you want to be in 6 months time, and how you are going to get there.

It’s about showing up even when you don’t feel like it.
