🌟 IBD Series | Crohn’s Disease vs Ulcerative Colitis 🌟

There are two types of IBD β€” Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC).

The main differences between them are:

πŸ‘‰CD causes inflammation anywhere in the GI tract, whereas UC is limited to the large intestine and re**um.

πŸ‘‰The symptoms are similar. In CD: diarrhoea, blood in stool, stomach pain, feeling tired, and weight loss. With UC: bloody diarrhoea, stomach pain, frequent bowel movements, and weight loss.

πŸ‘‰They are treated with similar medications, including anti-inflammatories, immunosuppressants, and biologics. However, if surgery is needed:

πŸ‘‰ In CD, only the damaged areas are removed.
πŸ‘‰ In UC, the entire large intestine and re**um are removed, and the small intestine is diverted to an opening in the abdomen called a stoma.

🌟 IBD Series | IBD vs IBS 🌟

Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) is different from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

πŸ”Ή IBD is classified as a disease, while IBS is a syndrome (a group of symptoms).
πŸ”Ή IBD causes inflammation that damages the intestines, whereas IBS does not cause inflammation.
πŸ”Ή IBD is treated with anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. corticosteroids), surgery, or biologics.
πŸ”Ή IBS treatment focuses on symptoms: diarrhoea ➑️ Atropine, constipation, bloating ➑️ probiotics.
πŸ”Ή IBD increases the risk of colon cancer, but IBS does not increase the risk of colon cancer or IBD.

πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Even though COPD damages the lungs permanently, treatment can help slow down the progression of the condition.

Such treatments include:
πŸ‘‰ Stopping smoking – this is the most important thing to do
πŸ‘‰ Inhalers and medicines – to help make breathing easier
πŸ‘‰ Pulmonary rehabilitation – a specialised programme of exercise and education
πŸ‘‰ Surgery or a lung transplant – although this is only an option for a very small number of people
