Am trying not to multi task my lunch! That is, eating, reading, using keyboard and spinning plates. I really fancied a hot steaming soup on this cold winters day and this red pepper and lentil soup was made pretty quick in the
I have sat and eaten it mindfully while listening to radio (music, as the news is stressing me out). This should help improve digestion of my food as my body swings into ‘rest and digest’ mode as opposed to ‘fight or flight’ mode where stress is high and energy is diverted away from digestion.
It’s only 15-20 mins dedicated time but it’s a hard habit to break when normality is a game of how much soup can I avoid dropping on my work, screen and PC. Even just thinking about your to-do list is enough to set off stress hormones.
Give it a try. Eat, breathe and switch off.

Detox day 7: Final day? Was supposed to be but I think I’m going to carry on a bit longer (but stop posting specifically).
Breakfast was (you guessed) a smoothie. Lunch was leftovers and dinner was a quick cook chicken biriyani with a green bean side dish - and while I can happily eat Indian food everyday of the week, the family are ready for a change of cuisine.
Exercise: Morning yoga and a long walk in Richmond park in the (unexpected) sunshine with a good friend.

Overall the week has been pretty successful.
I think because I haven’t felt deprived…
Yes I’ve omitted caffeine, sugar and gluten, but I’ve not been on a regime of twig tea and celery juice. What I have eaten is real, unprocessed, nutrient dense food; the food of my childhood, so flavourful with fresh herbs and aromatic spices.
I’ve stuck to 3 balanced meals a day, just the occasional snack, lots of water and some herbal tea.
Sleep has been amazing. Perhaps due to no caffeine but also due to switching off my phone an hour before bed, and getting to bed by 10.30pm.
The detox effect has also been physical. My joints have been noticeably less stiff and achy (a menopause symptom that I’ve not been able to resolve). I’m definitely make fewer old lady groans when I get out of bed each morning! It makes sense that better quality sleep (when the body recovers and repairs itself) and removing the inflammatory triggers sugar and gluten would create this positive effect.
Did you make any changes this week? And how did you get on? Are you inspired to do so?

Detox day 6: Brunch of a smoothie and a herb and chilli omelette. Dinner was more Indian with a lamb, aubergine and potato curry and a lentil dal.

Have been roping the kids in to help me cook as it’s half term and today was with Adam (15). Cooking side by side can often be a good way to get kids to talk, open up, discuss the things on their minds - a sort of cooking therapy. And at the end of it we had a satisfying meal.
Exercise: 40 mins yoga and then a walk around Kew Gardens to see the Japan exhibit with the girls.
Sleep: No alarm to wake me up this morning so had a full 10 hours. Sleep has been so good this week.

Detox day 5: Lunch was a cauliflower rice dish and a repeat of that lovely courgette and fennel seed curry I made on Monday. Cauli rice is a great alternative to regular rice (or potatoes and pasta) and contains a fraction of the carbs. It’s also incredibly quick to make

Detox day 4 dinner: Fish curry. Another Indian recipe which I’ll definitely be cooking again. 30 mins start to finish using onions, ginger/garlic paste (so please I made a batch of this - total time saver), green chilli, turmeric, tomatoes, white fish and coconut milk. Served with basmati rice and fresh coriander. So simple, so good.
Exercise: 90 mins gardening. Yes it counts!
Sleep: 8 hours although woke up with a headache. Maybe the caffeine withdrawal’s catching up with me

Detox day 2: The week is developing an Indian theme after buying cook book (yes I still buy them) by Monisha Bharadwaj. I first picked up a book of hers a few years ago in a second hand bookstore and have used it a lot. So when I came across a new book in Waterstones last week I had to buy it. So many really good, quick and simple recipes, totally removing the complicated and laborious out of Indian cooking. I’m hooked and tonight’s dinner was another winner - pumpkin and coconut curry. I had a load of pumpkin left over from soup I made a few days ago so perfect way to finish it off. Recipe is on last page of post (I added cauliflower too).

Lunch was a vegetable soup made in the and while the gadget was busy doing its thing I made a batch of garlic and ginger paste, the foundation of all the meals I plan to make from my new book. That was pretty laborious and messy and I must be leaving a waft of garlic everywhere I move. But it’s done and will make meal prep this week even quicker and easier.
Exercise: 40 mins yoga and lots of walking (does a big shop around sainsburys count)?
Sleep: Slept like a log for 8.5 hours. Am definitely doing the whole turning off phone an hour before/sleep hygiene again.
Now, Tell me yours.

Detox day 2: Breakfast in a hurry. Smoothies are the best for speed! Banana, flax seeds, peanut butter, kefir yoghurt and cashew nut milk.
Even smoothies take time to digest so swill each mouthful a few times before swallowing (to aid digestion)

Day 1 detox dinner:
Aubergine, chickpea and coconut curry.
Exercise: 40 mins of yoga with - a super app that totally works for me. 40 mins always feels like a good number; enough time to feel I’ve made a difference. My step count is pretty rubbish though.. definitely short of 10,000
How do I feel after day 1? Tired. I’m missing my coffee which I’ve become a little too reliant on of late. Have scheduled bedtime for 10.30pm so phone is being switched off at 9.30pm. That’s a tough one!

How are you getting on?

Detox day 1 lunch:
What to do with 2 courgettes? The quickest and tastiest dish - 15 mins max to make. Recipe on last page of post. I added half a chopped apple for sweetness, replace dill with fresh coriander and used lime instead of lemon as didn’t have all ingredients. Not eating bread this week so topped with an egg to make it more protein and less carby. If you regularly make Indian food you’ll have the spices, otherwise available from most large supermarkets or Indian grocer. I shared this with my daughter who finished six form early today and walked in hungry. So it’s really a recipe for 2, not 4..
