If you’ve been feeling the weight of ‘I should be feeding them better’ this post is for you 🙂

You care so much about your child’s health. You read all the nutrition articles, you plan healthy meals and you worry when they push them away.

You think other parents have it all figured out. But they don’t.

Here’s the truth about raising healthy eaters that you won’t ever read about:

The harder you try to ‘get it right’, the heavier mealtimes will feel and the more you, and your children, will dread them.

Kids don’t thrive under pressure. They thrive when they feel safe, understood and accepted.

This is your permission to take a step back. Worry less and connect more. You are doing enough.

Your child needs you to be there - relaxed and connected at mealtimes. That’s more nourishing than any perfect plate or eaten portion of broccoli ever could be ❤️

I set up this page 14 years ago.

Anyone remember when it was called ‘Teeny Tummies’? I had the cutest little baby cartoon logo.

But as I moved away from giving baby feeding and weaning advice I changed my business name too.

Since 2020, I have been The Family Food Coach.

It’s been a bit of a squiggly path getting me to where I am today, but I am more focussed and motivated now than ever.

My mission is clear. I’m here to help parents:

💜 feel more relaxed about food

💜 feel more confident about feeding their children and picky eaters well (after trying everything)

💜 have calmer, happier family mealtimes

💜 actually enjoy feeding their kids!

If you’re still here after all these years, THANK YOU.

There is more to come. But first, a move. I’m setting up a FFC Community Facebook group and would love you to join me over there.

Stay tuned for the details.

You are not a bad parent if your child doesn’t eat dinner, or refuses their veggies, or turns their nose up at something they ate the week before. Frustrating and worrying as it can be, it’s not your fault - it’s what kids do 🤍

How is it March?! 🌼🌼🌼 The year is flying and there’s been so much change for me in 2024 already… I got a job working for an amazing public health charity, so am now an employee - as well as a business owner! Anyway, it’s a very good thing for me on a number of personal levels, and I’m glad to say the adjustment is going well. But this shift has made me more determined than ever to keep my family nutrition & child feeding business alive, and to not just provide supportive and informative services for parents, but also accessible ones. I’ve got so many ideas (watch this space) but would also love to hear about what sorts of things you think might help you… My inbox is always open 💌

Let 2024 be the year you start enjoying family mealtimes.

To quote child feeding expert Ellyn Satter (founder of the Division of Responsibility): “When the joy goes out of feeding, nutrition suffers.”

This was dinner tonight and here are my 3 TOP TIPS FOR SERVING PROCESSED FOODS…

🍔 CHECK THE INGREDIENTS LABEL

>> It’s a legal requirement to list ingredients, they’ll be in weight order).

>> So if for example you’re buying burgers, chicken nuggets or fish fingers, compare different packets for the % meat/fish and choose the one with the highest.

>> The main ingredient you want to be eating should come first - so if you see water, sugar or anything else weird listed first MOVE ON and choose another brand.

>> Once you start looking and comparing you’ll be amazed by the difference between products!

🍔 SERVE ALONGSIDE OTHER NUTRITIOUS FOODS

>> Offering variety is always important, so think about what else you can offer to boost the nutritional content of the meal.

>> Here I added sweetcorn and salad in the burger. If I was more organised with my shopping and food pre (tonight was a rush!) I could have served wholemeal buns, burger cheese for added calcium and homemade potato wedges with skin on for extra fibre.

🍔 DON’T FEEL GUILTY

>> So often we beat ourselves up for not preparing freshly cooked meals but the reality is that it’s just not always possible.

>> With work schedules, kids activities and the general busy-ness and exhaustion of parent life, it’s important to have self-compassion.

>> Be kind to yourself because you are doing your best, and your best is absolutely enough. Your family will benefit from your positive, relaxed mindset 🤍
