Eyeliner, mascara, and other products can lead to or worsen dry eye. They can clog the meibomian glands in your eyelids, which make the oil for your tears. This is especially likely if you use eye makeup that contains glitter, of if you apply eyeliner to the inside of your lash line, so it’s best to avoid these.

Did you know that there are 2 main types of Dry Eye Disease, each with a different root cause? 👁

1. Aqueous-deficient dry eye occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough of the watery layer of your tears, making it impossible for the surface of the eye to remain sufficiently hydrated.⁣

2. Evaporative dry eye, also known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), occurs when the meibomian glands, which produce the important oily layer for your tears, don’t function properly. This oil keeps the tears stable, slowing down evaporation. MGD interferes with the production of this oil, which causes your tears to evaporate more quickly than normal.

April is Sjögren’s Awareness Month.

Sjögren’s is a systemic autoimmune disease that can affect multiple organs and tissues within the body.

The most common symptoms are:

➡️Dry eyes and mouth
➡️Fatigue
➡️Chronic pain
➡️Cognitive issues
➡️Vaginal dryness

Sjögren’s can also affect the lungs, liver, blood vessels, and more. The disease looks different in each individual, so symptoms and severity vary greatly from person to person.

While Sjögren’s can occur in anyone at any age, it is most commonly diagnosed in middle-aged women. Sjögren’s symptoms can appear similar to those of menopause, drug side effects, and a host of other autoimmune diseases. Sometimes the tendency is to treat individual symptoms rather than to recognise the presence of a systemic disease.

For all of these reasons, Sjögren’s is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
