I SEE THE BEAUTY IN YOUR CHILD
It's my job to recognise communication differences and difficulties but I want you to know I see so much more than that.
I will never know your child like you do. I don't see them when they wake in the night, how you comfort them when they are sick, how they play in the bath, their frustrations when something goes wrong, their excitement at seeing a bug on the pavement or the funny dance they do when a radio comes on. These are the privilidges of being a parent or significant adult.
When you choose me as your therapist I will really listen to you and I will ask a lot of questions. This helps me to understand you as a family. I will hear your struggles and worries AND I will also notice the beauty in your child. I look for what brings them joy, frustration and contentment and how they show it. I will adapt for you child to make that connection. You may see me lying on the floor, giving a big squeeze, jumping up and down, sitting quietly, or whatever they need. I'll meet them where they are right now.
I know how important it is to be heard and understood as a parent. I know that your child is everything to you. They are so much more than I could ever see in a session or capture in a report. They are beautiful and filled with potential.

Even if you've never heard of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), you you probably know someone with it. DLD is very common, and on average 2 children in ...

Many students with Developmental Language Disorder are SUPER aware of their difficulties compared to their peers. This can become a particular issue in high / secondary school. To avoid embarrassment many students with DLD will not ask for help. They want to fit in with everyone else.

One simple strategy is for the student and teacher to agree a subtle signal so the student can ask for help without feeling like they are the only one who doesn’t ‘get it.’ It can be a coloured card on the desk or a small hand signal.

Small changes such as these can really make a difference for students with DLD.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is not a 'delay.' It is not something that people with the condition will grow out of. It is a difference in how the brain processes language. That doesn't mean people with DLD cannot be smart and achieve, it just means they need to have their needs identified and supported.

Because so many think of DLD as a delay, many services focus on young children. There is growing awareness that teenagers and adults have DLD and that they need access to services too.

Join us on Friday October 15th and raise awareness of DLD. You can sign up to be an ambassador, you can ask a landmark to light up in purple or talk to a local school. Get involved and helps us to get our message out there!
