Ever wondered why your new year’s resolutions tend to die shortly after you start? Here are some reasons that if you avoid them, you will have the best out of your new year’s resolution!

1. The goals are too vague:

Resolutions like “get healthy,” “save money,” “be happier” aren’t actionable. Your brain does not know what to do with them.

2. People rely on motivation, not systems:

Motivation is highest on January 1st… and gone by mid-January. Habit change depends on systems (routines, environment changes), not willpower.

3. The goals are unrealistic:

“I will go to the gym every day” or “I will quit all sugar forever.” Big, sudden changes overwhelm your habits and nervous system.

4. There is no plan for obstacles:

People assume the year will go perfectly. Then they get sick, busy, stressed, or tired and then the resolution dies.

5. Too many goals at once:

A whole list of resolutions divides focus. Habit research shows you can reliably build 1–2 new habits at a time, not 10.

6. No tracking or accountability:

If you never measure progress, the brain does not get the reward signal that keeps habits going.

7. The identity does not change:

Saying “I want to run more” is different from “I am the type of person who runs.” Identity-based habits tend to stick.

Now you know how to own your 2026 New Years Resolutions!

Dr. Theochari has over 17 years of professional experience in pediatric and adolescent therapy. She has held several leadership roles, including: Head of Adult Mental Health Services in Community Settings (East London NHS) and Lead Occupational Therapist for an Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. She was also a teacher in a Greek school for over 17 years, supporting students with concentration, handwriting, and emotional regulation challenges.

Occupational Therapy service offers specialized support for adolescents on their mental health recovery journey. Dr. Evangelia has expertise in adolescent mental health recovery, family support, sensory integration, and coaching to help young people overcome daily challenges. She starts with thorough occupational therapy assessments to understand each individual’s needs, then provide personalized interventions that build practical life skills and coping strategies. These interventions often include sensory integration techniques to improve focus and emotional regulation, as well as therapeutic coaching to boost self-confidence. Family members are also involved to reinforce progress at home and ensure a strong support system. Our goal-oriented occupational therapy approach empowers young clients to thrive in school, at home, and in their communities.
