Equal hate crime protection: A step forward for England and Wales

Breaking: A new law amendment means anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime is now recognised as an aggravated offence. The Crime and Policing Bill ensures crimes targeting LGBTQ+ people because of their identity are treated more seriously, with stronger penalties.

This is a major step forward. The new law amendment brings penalties in line with those for race- and religion-based hate crimes and strengthens access to justice for trans people.

“Recognising anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime as an aggravated offence not only strengthens legal protections, but sends a clear message that our communities deserve equal safety, dignity and access to justice.

“For many, especially trans people, reporting hate crime can take time due to fear, trauma, and safety concerns. Removing the six-month time limit is a critical change that better reflects the lived realities of victims.

“While this progress should be acknowledged, it must also be the beginning of continued action to address the rising levels of hate and ensure that protections are felt in everyday life.”

Saskhia Menendez (she/her), Trans Charter Developer

The UK Government must now take urgent, comprehensive action to ensure the rights and safety of trans people across healthcare, education, and other sectors.
