🦟 What is chikungunya?
Chikungunya virus is a mosquito-borne infection that can cause fever, intense joint and muscle pain, headaches, light sensitivity, and skin rashes. Most people recover in a week or two, but some experience joint pain for months or even years. Severe symptoms are rare, but young babies and older adults with underlying health conditions are more at risk.
🌍 Where is it found?
Chikungunya has now spread to over 100 countries, and is mostly found in the Americas, Asia, and Africa. It has also occasionally occurred in Europe. The Aedes mosquitoes that transmit the virus are active during the day, especially around dawn and dusk, and often thrive in urban areas.
🧴 How can you protect yourself?
There is no specific treatment for infection, so bite prevention is key. If you're in a risk area, wear long sleeves and trousers, use insect repellent with at least 50% DEET, sleep under insecticide-treated nets, and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed.
💉 What about vaccines?
Two new vaccines — IXCHIQ® and Vimkunya® — have recently been approved in the UK, EU, and US. However, safety concerns have been raised about IXCHIQ® in people aged 60 and over. UK guidance on the use of chikungunya vaccines is still under review.
