Today is International Men’s Day. Ian Frost, deputy director of digital transformation at NHS South West London, shares how a health MOT last April sparked a life-changing journey.
“The assessment took less than 15 minutes and included blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI and cholesterol checks. I was told I was borderline obese and diabetic, with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. None of it was a surprise - but it was a wake-up call.
“I visited my GP and spoke with a physiotherapist and signed up to the NHS Couch to 5k running programme. I invested in proper shoes and running kit.
“I knew exercise alone wouldn’t help me lose weight so I cut out alcohol, biscuits, cake and chocolate. It was tough at first but I kept going and, by August, I was nearly running 5k and had lost 10kg.
“Fast forward to today, I’ve completed five Park Runs, lost 14kg and feel great. I can run for buses, climb stairs and my fitness watch says I’ve knocked eight years off my fitness age.
“My running mate and I have signed up for the 10k MoRun on 29 November to support Men’s Health Month. We’re also taking part in Movember and growing moustaches for the first time.
“Triathlon next? Maybe! The health check, a love of tech, a goal to aim for and support and encouragement from friends, family, and colleagues around me has been amazing.”
