This evening and into tomorrow marks the start of celebrations in 3 cultures and faiths.

Theravada is the Buddhist New Year, welcoming new hope celebrates Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing into Nirvana. It is a 3 day festival and this year takes us into 2569.

Naya Barsha is the Nepali New Year, beginning with the first day of Baisakh (sunrise on 14th April) . Significant in both the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, this is a harvest festival celebrating nature's rejuvenation, family and cultural unity.

Vaisakhi, celebrated around the same time in the Sikh faith shares some of the same significance as Naya Barsha (also known as Baisakhi)
and both are harvest festivals

But whilst Baisakhi is more focussed on family and culture, Vaisakhi has more of a religious importance, with an emphasis on the Sikh identity.

Whether or not you are a member of any of these faiths or communities, the thing they all have in common is unity and a joy of rebirth, family and hope. Come together to celebrate with our friends and neighbours as they mark these special and important dates in the calendar.
