Lightwork Nutrition

Lightwork Nutrition I help binge eaters find a balanced & peaceful relationship with food so they can get on with living! But by the following day, you're back where you started.

How often have you told yourself this would be the last time? If this sounds all too familiar, I'm here to tell you that you can be free of the binge eating cycles, if you're ready to try something new. Before you sigh, thinking this is yet more diet sheets and months of superhuman willpower, fear not! I'm well aware these don't work and just leave you feeling more demoralised and entrenched in unhealthy patterns. My name is Olivia Shakespear and I'm a nutritional therapist and health coach and I was a binge eater for over 20 years. I use 12 week one to one programmes to help you end binge eating once and for all, no matter how long you've been on the rollercoaster. You don't have to go it alone anymore. The accountability and education provided by supportive one to one coaching is essential. Plus it makes the process so much more enjoyable! It really is possible to turn your life around and find lasting peace with food. So take that next step and head to my website where you can download my free Recovery Guide and book a free 30 minute consultation.

Even though it's very stereotyped to recommend smoothies as a nutritionist, they are actually a really good option for people recovering from disordered eating and binge eating.

If you're feeling cravings and a bit on edge, and unable to distract yourself from thoughts of food, they are brilliant. They only take a minute to make and because of the fruit in there, they satisfy the need for sugar. All the nutrients they contain help stabilise blood sugars and basically switch off the desire to want to eat large quantities of rubbish!

I try and have one every other day at least, as this way it works to prevent the cravings from even popping up. Doesn't mean I don't sometimes have a flapjack or something else when I need a snack, as recovery is all about balance 😊

Richard Rudd - author of The Gene Keys - talks about how all our shadow elements give rise to a specific gift. I find this such an enlightened way of looking at life, rather than wondering why we've been given these challenges.

Addiction is all over my Gene Keys chart but now I see how this challenge has given me the opportunity to learn the gifts that come out of overcoming addiction. One of which is being able to work with people and help them overcome their addictive patterns around food.

Realising that being a binge eater didn't mean I was broken, was one of the most important parts of my recovery. So many years spent thinking there must be something so deeply wrong with me, when it turned out I'd just gotten into bad habits that my brain learned over time!

I know it might seem like a sensible idea if you feel like you've blown it. Maybe just a day or two of super clean eating? It's the fastest way to start the whole cycle up again.

You haven't blown it - all those good days you've had have been rewiring your brain, and one or two days of binge eating or feeling out of control will not erase that.

The only answer is to go back to the three most important things that will prevent pressing the sod it button:

1. Eat adequately

2. Throw away your list of all the foods you "shouldn't" have - any feeling of a diet day will have you eating a whole load of food later in the day!

3. Get support:)

If you want more details on how to do this, download my free ebook from my website or DM me and I'll send the link 🙂

It's not always easy to know if you've binged, and although the technical definition doesn't clear it all up, it can be helpful for people who may overeat a little and are wondering if they are a binge eater.

This isn't to say that overeating on a regular basis isn't something worth sorting out, but it's important to know that binge eating is not the same as overdoing it.

I work with both binge eaters and people who feel they lack balance in their diet. If you aren't sure, message me in the comments and I'll DM you a link where you can book a free half hour consultation where we can discuss in more detail🙂

I'll keep coming back to these points as it's the foundation for moving on from binge eating and yo-yo dieting.

1. Remember an impulse to binge/overeat is just neurological junk and the only way to break the pattern is to understand what it is and learn how you can ignore it (yes it is possible!)

2. If you have a history of dieting and don't eat enough you trigger the primal parts of the brain to produce impulse after impulse, making the first part so much harder.

3. Support and accountability is crucial for the first few months - whether friend, family or coach.

If we don't give ourselves enough healthy sugars then we start craving the unhealthy ones. Smoothies are a great way to pack in the fruit even if sometimes you choose to have something less healthy! There are no rules around not eating certain snacks when it comes to disordered eating recovery, but that doesn't mean delicious and healthy snacks need to be avoided!

Lao Tzu is regarded as the founder of Taoism and seemed like he had a fair amount of wisdom! I feel this quote is apt for the subject matter, when it comes to moving on from addiction, it's very important to go inwards and stand strong in your knowing of who you really are.

It may sound like a sily idea to go out and buy some lovely, delicious treat foods that you'd usually polish off in an evening. But get used to keeping things around the house and they lose their power over you. For how to deal with the impulse to push the sod it button, have a look at my other posts or website.

Happy shopping 😀

We walk past plants every day that contain so much goodness. We tend to call them weeds - but anything that grows like wildfire is usually highly resilient, and when we eat these plants, we take on that resilience.

Dandelions are a great one - you may feel like a bit of a fool collecting dandelions, especially in a city, but give them a good wash and add a few leaves or flower petals to your salad - pretty and healthy!

Have you actually made the decision to let bad eating habits and binge eating go? It's easy to think you may have, when really there is a tiny part that holds off and delays for many different reasons. The key reason for me was that oddly I knew I could do it, so I just kept delaying and delaying.

Once you make that decision on a really deep level then everything changes...

If you think avoiding trigger foods forever is the way to go, I would strongly recommend you try another approach. The only way to truly get over your fear of having them around, is to actually have them around!

It's amazing how quickly they lose their power when you keep things in the house that you'd usually avoid - you know, until you binge on them that is.

Remember, any impulse that comes up around overeating on them is just brain junk - and the only way to rewire the brain to go down different routes  is to tackle the issue head on.

Multiple steps from farm to fork and a long list of unrecognizable ingredients can be more than a little problematic for our health. Chris Van Tulleken's book Ultra Processed People is eye opening on this subject and well worth a read 🙂

Something anyone who struggles with the on/off eating wagon might need to hear. Hard to get up in a positive mood after the 1000th failed eating plan! But it only has to happen once - if you can let go of your old ways of going about it 🌞

Adding powders to smoothies is a really easy way to get more nutrients in. And I picked some delicious ones, with one slightly icky one in the middle, but you won't even taste it if you only add a tiny amount! Actually, it's worth saying, if you are new to spirulina then do start small e.g. 1/2 tsp as too much can give you a right old headache.

Hibiscus is my new favourite - plus it makes it all so pretty. All three are packed full of antioxidants and spirulina helps the body get rid of toxins.
Happy blending 😊

Why Slimming Clubs Don't Work for People who Binge Eat

They might be great for some people (and they even work if you stick to the plan!), but for anyone with disordered eating or particularly anyone who binge eats they are a pretty bad idea. And believe me, I've tried them all!

Ultimately they can trigger more extreme behaviours for a couple of reasons that I go into in this video...
