New Year Detox

After finishing all the Christmas/New Year goodies, it's time to give the gut a good clear out. Increase/Double the amount of vegetable intake. All vegetables are good!!! I eat them with hummus or coleslaw, makes them less boring!!

Avoid processed foods (foods which come with fancy wrapppers) and try to keep this up for 2 weeks.

Avoid Sleeping on your Tummy

To breathe, the face has to turn to one side. Sleeping on your tummy puts a lot of strain on the neck and jaw, especially if you lie in this position for hours. Also, with the head turned to one side, the rest of the body will follow. The shoulders and hips will also be wonky.
Do your best to get out of this habit. Otherwise neck and jaw symptoms may develop.
It will take time to retrain the body to sleep on your back or side.

Coffee and Caffeine

Coffee is the most common hot beverage consumed globally. Caffeine is present in both coffee and black tea except coffee has twice the amount of caffeine. But caffeine content will vary depending on the preparation method. e.g. brewing time and serving size.
Caffeine is a powerful stimulant to the central nervous system. Research has shown caffeine improves mental and physical alertness by increasing dopamine and blocking adenosine (which promotes sleep). Caffeine will affect the body within 15-45 minutes of consumption.
Studies have also shown that coffee lowered the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Coffee contains antioxidants which help protect the body against heart disease, liver disease and cancer.
A cup of coffee provides health benefits in many people but too much coffee can cause anxiety as it can prolong the 'fight or flight' effect and for some this can also lead to insomnia. Also, an increased heart rate and pressure can result from excessive consumption. Coffee is naturally acidic and can also increase production of stomach acid which can irritate the digestive system. Avoid drinking coffee therefore on an empty stomach. Coffee and tea have a stimulatory effect on the bladder, meaning more frequent urination and consequently dehydration.
More is not always better. A cup a day is healthier.

What is Piriformis Syndrome

Sciatica is a pain that runs from the buttocks down the legs. This is usually caused by irritation of the sciatica nerve from the lower back. However the piriformis muscle is a deeper muscle under the gluteus that runs across the buttock and can put pressure on the sciatic nerve causing similar symptoms.

Stretching the glute/buttock muscle by hugging the knee will also stretch the piriformis muscle to help soften the muscle (see photos 1 & 5).

Lying on a tennis ball under the buttock and grinding on it will be beneficial – (see photo 4).

Heat pads will tenderise the muscle.

Do not forget it is equally important to stretch the opposite muscles, the hip flexors at the front of the hip by pulling the heel up to the buttock or lunges - (See photos 2 & 3).

If the symptoms do not reduce after a fortnight, this often tells me there is also irritation of the nerve on the lower back which requires physical adjustment.

Benefits of Pineapple

Pineapple contains Bromelain which is an enzyme to help the digestion of protein. So pinapple is a good fruit to eat after a meal.

If you suffer with (ITB) Iliotibial Band Syndrome, the pelvis may be "wonky" which will cause the ITB to pull unevenly. - See Image 1.

Good Exercises are:-

1) Stretching the ITB and pelvis - stretch by lying on the back, bend the problem knee up and let it flop across the body to the other side. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times - See Image 2.

2) Strengthening the abductor muscles by folding an old pillow in half, place between the knees and squeeze together. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times. - See Image 3

Basic Core Strengthening Exercise

A simple exercise to start Core Strengthening while lying in bed

• Lift one leg up to around 30 cms.
• Hold it for 3 seconds
• Try not to dig the heel of other leg into the bed – see photo 1
• Then lower down the raised leg
• Alternate with the other leg doing the same movement
• Remember to breathe out when lifting the leg up
• Repeat 5 – 10 times
