Since July 2024, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been taking part in The Generation Study, screening newborns for over 200 rare but treatable conditions.

👶 So far:
• 2,440 babies enrolled across both hospitals
• 1,721+ samples collected from umbilical cord blood

This research aims to help identify rare conditions earlier, giving children the best chance for timely treatment.

🤰 Expectant parents can speak to their midwife to learn more. Participation is free and optional.

💬 Emily, who had her baby at West Middlesex University Hospital said: "The maternity team have been incredibly supportive. Signing up was easy, and the whole process was also explained during an appointment, which gave us the chance to ask questions and talk everything through in detail. The results came through quickly - we received them a couple of weeks after our son was born."

Last week we marked National Apprenticeship Week, and celebrated 116 colleagues who have successfully completed their apprenticeship programmes across clinical and non-clinical services this year.

This year’s cohort reflects the breadth of opportunity across the Trust, with colleagues qualifying as Healthcare Support Workers, Nursing Associates, Registered Nurses, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Pharmacy Technicians. Non-clinical apprentices have completed programmes in leadership, education, digital and data, business administration and information governance.

Apprenticeships remain a vital route for career development, supporting colleagues to build skills while continuing to deliver high-quality care and services.

Thank you to the managers, mentors and teams who have supported our apprentices, and congratulations to all who have completed their programme this year.

Our Trust has launched a new physiologist‑led valve clinic, giving patients faster access to specialist assessment and earlier diagnosis of heart valve disease.

Opened last month, the service is expected to support 200–250 patients in its first year across both Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital — increasing to 400–500 patients a year as the clinic grows.

❤️ Why this matters
Heart valve disease affects how blood flows through the heart and often develops silently. Early detection is key, helping prevent complications and ensuring timely treatment.

Mary J. O’Donoghue, one of the first patients to attend the clinic said: “I was reviewed at the valve clinic and was extremely satisfied with the care I received. I felt well supported and reassured throughout my appointment. I will return in six months for further monitoring and additional care if needed.”

Meet Penelope 💜 who was born by emergency c‑section at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital at 37 weeks, weighing 5lb 6. She had gastroschisis meaning several organs, including her bowel and bladder, developed outside her body, and she was taken straight to surgery before spending just over three weeks in NICU.

She recently turned five, and her mum Corrina has thanked the maternity and neonatal teams who cared for them during the height of the Covid pandemic.

Corrina said: “As a first‑time mum I was so worried, but midwife Allison Downey kept me positive throughout my pregnancy—we’ll tell Penelope about her for years. We were also supported by Angela Yulia during regular scans; her warmth and honesty meant so much during an uncertain time.

After Penelope’s surgery, the NICU nurses and doctors were incredible—kind, informative and genuinely caring. Penelope now has annual check‑ups with the paediatric surgical team, and at her recent visit, seeing her standing outside the NICU where we spent so many days reminded us just how far she’s come.”

We invited in to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to speak to Marie-Klaire Farrugia about the AI-supported inpatient scheduling tool we piloted and have now rolled out across the Trust.

We are proud to be improving our services, making things more efficient for patients and clinicians.

HIV doesn’t always come with symptoms - and it can affect anyone.

Testing is the only way to know. In 2024, HIV testing in London increased and new diagnoses fell. That progress matters - and it only happens if we keep testing.
