Here are a few key reminders about baby led breastfeeding.
π€ Healthy babies have brilliant instincts to breastfeed.
π First, get your body comfy. Relax, leaning back, use pillows and your environment to feel supported.
π©· Place your baby on your body with their tummy against you, their hips, knees and feet on you, arms either side of the breast. When your baby feels stable against you they'll use their amazing natural abilities to find your ni**le.
π€ Babies find this easiest skin to skin or lightly dressed in the early days. It's a lovely time to cuddle and rest.
π©΅ You can adjust your body and your baby in ways that feel good for you both.
π Your baby will naturally latch onto the ni**le and start sucking. After the first few seconds it should be comfortable.
π As your baby swallows you'll see their jaw drop and there will be a tiny pause. You might hear them gulp or make a little 'cuh' noise from their nose.
𧑠Be generous with feeds. Offer both sides each time. You're hoping for lots of feeding, at least eight times in 24 hours but more is great.
π©Ά Keep an eye on their behaviour, nappy output and weight gain, as a guide to how it's going.
π€ There's masses of support, don't hesitate to ask.
