Bottle feeding parents deserve more skilled support!

If the teat is a good fit your baby will have relaxed lips that are turned outwards. They will not dribble, click or slurp while drinking.

If you'd like any help with bottle feeding please pop over to my website www.cathysage.com for more articles or to book a consultation with me.

You'll be encouraged to collect some of your first milk, colostrum, from about 37 weeks pregnant. Many women find it an empowering skill to learn. Extra colostrum feeds can be super valuable if your new baby is poorly or has particularly low blood sugar.

However, some women find antenatal hand expressing hard and unrewarding. That's OK. We can help you to collect milk after your baby is born if you need to.

For more information on how and why to harvest colostrum, pop over to my website www.cathysage.com or follow the link in my bio πŸ‘†πŸΌ

I worked with a beautiful family yesterday. Their six month old baby had breastfed every two hours day and night while her mother struggled through bleeding ni***es, postnatal depression and chronic sleep deprivation. As she talked about breastfeeding you could almost see her skin crawling. Her GP and Health Visitor had dismissed her tears because her baby was growing. She was desperate to get her reluctant baby to take a bottle.

I'm happy to report that the gorgeous baby now enjoys a bottle of formula with no problems. The mum is overjoyed and planning to "go into town on my own for a couple of hours." It will be the first time she's had a proper break in six months πŸ’œπŸ§‘πŸ’™.

Perhaps you've found the same?

For help with any aspect of breast or bottle feeding, please give me a call or buy my book Breast, Bottle or Both. No judgement here, just support on your journey.

Laid back breastfeeding works with your baby's natural instincts:
🀍 Get comfortable, put your baby on their tummy against you where they can reach the ni**le without you needing to move it to them.
πŸ’› Allow them to open their mouth and suck themself into place.
πŸ’™ After one or two sucks it should be pain free.
🧑 If they are a bit nose-dived and snuffly, tuck their bum in nice and close to you, it raises their nose a tiny bit.
πŸ’œ Make any small adjustments that keep you both relaxed. Maybe place a cushion under your supporting arm, enjoy a warm drink or snack... enjoy the snuggly feeding time.

Do you use relaxed breastfeeding positions? I wasn't told about them years ago when I had my babies. Now I feel like I missed out! It's so gorgeous to help mums at consultations and drop ins to feed in this calm and instinctive way πŸ₯°

There are lots of breastfeeding specialists and organisations out there, and they do fabulous work, but bottle feeding parents are often left without support with their feeding challenges.

I often help families when their baby:
🍼can't latch onto the bottle well
🍼struggles with excessively fast or slow bottle feeds
🍼is uncomfortable with wind/gas/colic/reflux
🍼shows signs of allergies
🍼used to take a bottle but now refuses

When a baby can't take a bottle well, there is a reason. In the first six months, that reason is never that your baby "is holding out until you offer the breast" or "just isn't hungry enough."

In a bottle feeding consultation we talk about the journey so far, including birth and the early days. I look at how the baby’s tongue, mouth and jaw are working and the way they hold their body. We select and try a range of bottles teats, flow rates and other feeding equipment. I'll show the parents a number of feeding positions unique to their baby's needs and preferences. We'll practice some oral exercises that improve bottle skills. We work as a team with the baby to make progress.

If you'd like help now please give me a call or follow the links in my bio πŸ‘†πŸΌ. I offer home visits in London, video calls, and my book Breast, Bottle or Both is a great resource for general advice ✨️

Sending best wishes for all of those feeling alone with their bottle challenges πŸ€πŸ’™πŸ’–

Has your baby started refusing a bottle? Perhaps they used to take one as a newborn, and it suddenly feels like they've forgotten how to do it? 🀨

This is super common. It's not your fault. It's all about their oral anatomy, what's going on in their body, their stage of development, and the equipment and techniques you use.

The good news is, I can often help! We can review your baby's skills and use exercises and the right tools for them. You and your baby will work as a team, you'll use kind and respectful techniques to overcome their challenges ✨️

If you're struggling please give me a call. I do home visits on London and online consultations πŸ’–

You'll find more general information in my book Breast, Bottle or Both.

Supporting your baby's weight with a pillow can help to relieve sore arms and wrists and give you both hands free for something else!

Make sure the pillow is firm and flat, and tucked in close to your body so there's no gap. The breast rests on the pillow. Your baby lies on their side, tummy to tummy with you so they can easily reach the ni**le without you moving it. You might need to experiment a bit to find the right pillow(s) that fits your body so you can relax your shoulders and enjoy the feed.

If you'd like more information about comfortable breastfeeding please see my articles at www.cathysage.com or buy my book Breast, Bottle or Both on Kindle.

It was so lovely to catch up with Emily, Cam and baby Reggie this week.

Relaxed, laid back breastfeeding is such a natural and baby-led way to feed. Full term healthy babies know how to do this! Just put them tummy to tummy with mummy in a place where they can use their instincts and find the ni**le.

For more details about laid back breastfeeding and what a good latch looks like, pop to my articles on www.cathysage.com or buy my book Breast, Bottle or Both on Kindle πŸ€πŸ’œπŸ’™
