The loveliest gathering of herbalists over lunch yesterday; some that I got to meet for the first time after almost 3 years of being in Norfolk! Thank you to Julie & Matthew for hosting, and to Christine for popping into Caley’s Apothecary to track me down 😆💚 Such a welcome 🌿✨

What’s up there, at the top of the list, amongst visiting one of the seven wonders of the world and world heritage sites, for a UK based herbalist, when visiting India..? *insert drumroll* Getting to the herb shops, of course! ☺️🌿
This wonderful shop had us feel at home, amongst the herbs and spices! We stopped here after meandering through Khari Baoli; Asia’s (and possibly the world’s!) largest wholesale spice market, which has operated since the 17th century! Find it in the western end of Chandni Chowk in Delhi 💚🌱🌿🇮🇳

A day out of the clinic and today, as I did the Emergency First Aid at Work course refresher! We didn’t get our group shot (!), but thank you to Sarah .loveart for having us, and to for running a fab course today.

Here is Piper longum, commonly known as Long Pepper or Pippali in Ayurvedic medicine!

It’s not a spice very commonly found in the supermarkets of the UK, but readily available in the spice markets of Delhi, such as Khari Baoli!

It is warming, and both sweet and spicy; used to stimulate digestion and metabolism, whilst having decongestant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Long Pepper was thrown more into the spotlight in the last few decades, when trials were carried out on combinations of Long Pepper with Turmeric.

Turmeric alone is poorly absorbed, but its bioavailability and absorption is greatly enhanced when taken alongside Long Pepper.
Black Pepper is frequently seen in supplements with Turmeric now, as it became more widely studied, being more readily available. Both Long Pepper & Black Pepper contain a compound called piperine; shown to enhance bioavailability of curcumin (from Turmeric/Curcuma longa). The power of plants! 🌿🌸
