Study on early liver disease could have ‘profound effect’ on NHS

The largest liver study in NHS history is launching this week. Around 42,000 people across the UK will be screened for early signs of liver disease in a groundbreaking trial funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

Led by Professor Emmanouil Tsochatzis, consultant hepatologist at the Royal Free Hospital and professor of hepatology at University College London, the study — the DIAgnosis of liver disease in primary care (DIALS) trial — has been awarded £3.4 million by NIHR.

Early diagnosis could:
✔ Save thousands of lives
✔ Reduce hospital admissions
✔ Cut costs for the NHS

Those at higher risk of liver disease due to excessive alcohol intake, Type 2 diabetes or obesity, will be invited for testing by participating GPs and a combination of three non-invasive liver scans will be used to determine the most efficient way to diagnose the condition early.

Congratulations from all of us at the Royal Free London to Royal Free Charity chair Judy Dewinter, who's been awarded an MBE for services to the NHS in the King's New Year Honours.

Our chief executive Peter Landstrom said of Judy's honour: "As our lead governor and now chair of the Royal Free Charity, Judy has been a true champion of the NHS, of its dedicated staff and, most of all, of the patients we care for. We're delighted to see her incredible contribution recognised nationally."

Our chair, Judy Dewinter, has been awarded an MBE for services to the NHS.

"I'm honoured and humbled by this recognition. I hope it shines a light on what NHS charities can achieve for patients and for our amazing NHS staff."

Under Judy's leadership, the Royal Free Charity has delivered some of our most ambitious work to date: accelerating investment in research and clinical innovation; speeding up cancer diagnoses and treatment and helping the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust go further than it could with NHS funding alone.

Judy left a successful career in stockbroking when she was diagnosed with myeloma. She has since dedicated herself to charitable work and has gone on to help improve care and treatment for NHS patients across north London.

Judy's leadership combines her lived experience as an NHS patient with her financial acumen, helping to focus our funding on where we can make the greatest difference for patients and staff.

Congratulations, Judy, from everyone at the Royal Free Charity. 💙

This month marks the 35th anniversary of the Ian Charleson Day Centre (ICDC) at the Royal Free Hospital.

Since opening, the ICDC has witnessed – and driven – a revolution in care provided to those living with HIV. Thanks to effective antiviral drugs, patients newly diagnosed with the condition are now able to lead long, healthy lives.

Today, they support around 3,000 patients through a multidisciplinary approach that ensures anyone newly diagnosed receives immediate psychological and peer support, alongside access to essential services.

The ICDC also continues to advance care through clinical trials and social science research.

Staff, patients, volunteers and the Mayor of Camden, Councillor Eddie Hanson, came together to celebrate this milestone and reflect on the centre's pioneering legacy.
