Resident doctors at the Royal Free London — previously known as junior doctors — are on strike from 7am on Tuesday 7 April until 6.59am on Monday 13 April.

All our hospitals will be impacted by this industrial action — Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital, North Middlesex University Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital. We are working hard to ensure we minimise disruption to services.

Emergency care and acute services will be prioritised, and patients seeking urgent treatment will be seen.

However, where appropriate, please use other non-hospital services for advice and treatment during this period of industrial action, such as:

✅ NHS 111: www.111.nhs.uk or call 111
✅ GP practices (they will continue to be open during the strike)
✅ walk-in centres
✅ pharmacies

If you have an outpatient appointment or a procedure with us, you will be contacted directly if this needs to be rescheduled. Please attend as normal if you don’t hear from us.

The Royal Free Hospital has carried out the UK’s first robotically assisted surgery to reconstruct a breast.

A procedure that would usually take nine hours was completed in just six, using the da Vinci surgical robot, with a team of expert surgeons from the Royal Free Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital.

Patricia, who had a mastectomy following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2019, said: “I’ve had no pain in my abdomen whatsoever. Meditation helped but I absolutely credit the robot.”

Her surgery was supported by the trust’s second surgical robot — funded by the Royal Free Charity and in use since last November — helping the trust deliver even more world class care.

Measles is currently circulating in north central London.

It usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth.

Call your GP surgery, visit nhs.uk/111, or call NHS 111 for advice on what you should do if you or your child are showing symptoms.

If you think you or your child require emergency care, do not hesitate to call 999 for help.

Having the MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent measles. Contact your GP to book a vaccine appointment, and learn more about the vaccine👇

The Royal Free Hospital (RFH) hosted the launch of the assessment and repair centre (ARC) pilot in partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).

The event was opened by Dr Zubir Ahmed MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health Innovation and Safety, who has a longstanding connection to the RFH, having first trained here in 1998.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Ahmed highlighted the importance of boosting donation and transplantation rates: “We need to get donation rates up higher, and we need to understand why they’re not… ARC is a fundamental component of getting that rate of transplantation and donor acceptance back up again – making sure we are utilising every single bit of donation to the maximum effect.”

Wednesday 1 April marks the beginning of the Jewish festival of Passover.

Also known as Pesach, Passover is an eight-day period commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Part of this commemoration involves eating unleavened bread Matzah. It's a time of reflection, family gatherings, and symbolic traditions.

We wish all our patients, staff and the wider community a happy Passover.
