When thinking about life changes, or finding balance in life, The Wheel of Life is a great visual tool to help you understand where you spend most of your time and energy. This tool can help you assess each area of your life and understand what's off balance, as such, it helps you identify what areas need more attention. It's a great way to get some perspective and assess why some areas of your life feel too full or completely empty.
To do this exercise:
This diagram is an example but you can fill the headings with areas of your life that relate to you. This is done by assessing the roles you play in life (husband, mother, manager, team leader, friend etc) and the areas that are important to you (artistic expression, career, education, friendship). Once this is done you can write these in the border and start assessing each topic.
Go through each section and fill in a number from 1-10 that you feel is honest, 1 is the lowest and 10 the highest mark. Think about each section carefully and make notes in each section (gym, walking the dog, cooking). Then think about the amount of attention you are devoting to that area of your life.
Next, does your wheel look balanced? What areas are you spending the most time on and what areas are on the lower end of the scale?
After this, think about your ideal wheel of life.
A balanced life does not mean getting 5 marks in each section, some areas of life naturally need more attention.
So the question is, what would be the ideal level of attention be for you in each area of life?
Once you have a visual representation of your ideal Wheel of Life then you can take action. Look at what needs to change and how you might achieve this. I find it helps to make notes and set small, realistic goals.
