With the sad passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II I am reminded that my father achieved his first professional qualification (and got married!) in 1952, the year of the Queen's accession to the throne. So her 70-year reign covered the whole history of our practice thus far.
God save the King.

Once again I'd like to highlight the amazing generosity of our patients. The small (and not so small!) donations made for those small repairs and adjustments for which we don't charge certainly add up. Thank you!

Seeing as VirginMoneyGiving is closing, it was an opportunity to save the details of the page I set up in memory of my father (who started this practice) who passed away in 2016. Such lovely comments there, and a tribute to him that £773 was raised for Macmillan and the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers' Charity.

We are now closed until 10am on Sunday 3 Jan. We wish all our patients a happy, peaceful and healthy Christmas and New Year. It has been a strange and difficult year, but reassuring to see so many familiar (masked) faces and lots of new ones.
By the way, the photo is of a pair of folding lorgnettes in our ‘museum’.

'Optometrist and author, David Baker, has been named one of two joint runners-up in a VE Day 75th Anniversary Livery Quiz, which earned him a prize of £150 to be shared equally between the charity of his Livery Company, the WCSM, and a charity of his choice. COVID-19: The practice is closed for all routine consultations. At present we are unable to see patients face-to-face even for emergencies as we are still awaiting confirmation of availability of protective equipment.
We are able to deal with some spectacle repairs and replacements by appointment.
Enquires relating to eye conditions or spectacles can be directed to Mr Baker at:

We wish all our patients safe and well, and hope to see you when we are back to some form of normality.

A weekend chuckle for our many musical patients - you know the score!

We thought we’d seen them all but this one could be a new take on a familiar theme. Original post was from a musician. Enjoy....

Season’s Greetings to all our patients. And you are ‘patients’, not ‘customers’ and we run a ‘practice’ not a ‘store’. I emphasise this because (and I think you know this) you are more than just the next appointment in the book to us. I get great pleasure from getting to know our patients and seeing members of their extended families; and, actually, just as used to be the case with GPs, it can be an important factor in continuity of care and knowing how to deal with each individual.
I am minded to write this after what has been a difficult week in which news has come of several longstanding patients (all with us for well over 30 years) who have serious illnesses and one who has passed away. At this time of the year especially, my thoughts are with them and their families; and I wish all of you a happy and healthy New Year.
We will be closed from 5pm on 24 Dec until 10am on Thurs 2 Jan.

Well, I've been back at work for a few days now, and I would just like to thank everyone who has sent get well messages and enquired after my health.

Hi everyone. I just want to let you know that I’m on a sudden enforced vacation due to a leg infection I contracted that has put me in hospital for a few days. My brilliant receptionist Anne will be on hand to deal with queries and collections where possible. I’ll let you know when I’m back in action. And the moral of the story is - always listen to your wife when she says, ‘Go and see the doctor!’

EASTER CLOSING. Please note we will be closed from Friday 19 April - Monday 22 April. Open again as usual on Tuesday 23 April.
We wish all our patients a Happy Easter

News flash! Pleased to announce that my latest book, 'Window of the Soul', has been nominated by my publisher, FeedARead, for the 2019 Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize.

The prize has championed outstanding popular science writing since 1988 and is the only major international prize that celebrates all areas of science writing for a non-specialist audience.

The shortlist is announced in August, and the winner announced at the awards ceremony in October. Previous winners include Bill Bryson and Stephen Hawking.

Window of the Soul is available from FeedARead and all good bookshops.
