Meet Fred, our therapy dog superstar! 🐾

Our registered therapy dogs bring comfort, companionship, and little moments of happiness to patients, families, and staff. Their visits, which are funded by Imperial Health Charity help lift spirits and create a sense of calm in the hospital environment.

Every Friday, Fred and his volunteer Vicky spread joy during Fred Fridays! 🐶 Fred is trained to ensure he’s calm, gentle and ready to brighten your day. These photos were captured when Fred visited our patients at the Lindo Wing.

Fun fact: Fred was named ‘happiest dog in the UK’ by a national newspaper and loves his octopus toy, gifted by the Intensive Care Unit team!

👩🏻‍⚕️Miss Marisa Taylor-Clarke, consultant obstetrician, brings a unique blend of psychology and neuroscience approach towards her care.

With a BSc in Psychology, medical training and a PhD focused on fetal brain development in complex twin pregnancies, Marisa shares how her training has shaped her unique perspective.

“The psychology component of my training helps me to understand what’s important for parents in their journey and how to help them navigate the decisions and choices that modern medical systems can present to people.

“After starting medical school, I changed paths to explore psychology and neuroscience. After achieving my BSc, I returned to graduate medicine with a clear purpose: to make a difference in people’s lives while embracing the academic challenge of modern healthcare.”

Marisa’s approach blends practical, hands‑on expertise with compassionate, psychologically‑informed care. She prioritises getting to know each person, understanding what matters most in their pregnancy.

🩺🎖️ Mr Lalin Navaratne, consultant surgeon at the Lindo Wing, specialises in general, upper gastrointestinal and trauma procedures. Lalin works across the NHS, private care and the British Armed Forces (Defence Medical Services), where he serves as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Lalin is highly skilled in a procedure that allows a one‑stage approach to gallbladder and bile duct stone management.

The procedure involves using a thin, steerable endoscope with a miniature camera and powerful light (SpyGlass cholangioscopy) to clearly visualise gallstones and safely extract the bile duct stones (laparoscopic common bile duct exploration or LCBDE).

What the SpyGlass procedure can do:
🔍 Remove or fragment large bile duct stones for easy extraction
🧪 Obtain targeted biopsies (tissue samples)
🧼 Clear the bile duct at the same time as gallbladder removal (keyhole surgery)

What’s special about this one‑stop approach to care? Unlike similar procedures, combining SpyGlass with LCBDE can lead to:
✅ Higher rates of success
✅ Reduced risk of complications
✅ A shorter hospital stay
✅ Increased patient satisfaction

🏥 Did you know that fatty liver disease is now the most common liver condition in the UK? And many people have it without knowing.

Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver, which can lead to inflammation and, if untreated, more serious problems.

Risk factors include obesity and type 2 diabetes (where fatty liver is very common), high blood pressure, a high‑calorie diet, and limited exercise. Those over 50 may also be at greater risk.

Dr Luke Tyson is a consultant hepatologist specialising in alcohol‑related liver disease and non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Luke is part of a team that is at the forefront of research, offering expert guidance on the latest treatments and medications.

As one of the largest fatty liver disease services in the UK, our patients have the potential for early access to innovative therapies as they become available and expert guidance on the latest treatments.

🫀Meet Dr Iqbal Malik, consultant cardiologist at Imperial College Private Healthcare, who shares his approach to caring for patients.

Dr Malik is at the forefront of innovative procedures that don’t just treat heart conditions, but also help patients live longer, healthier lives.

One such breakthrough is TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation). This minimally invasive procedure replaces a damaged heart valve without open-heart surgery, offering faster recovery and improved outcomes.

TAVI can be life-changing for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis, which is a condition that can be life-threatening. It’s an option for those over 70 or younger patients with a previous valve replacement that’s deteriorating or at higher risk from conventional surgery.

More recently, TAVI has expanded to treat leaky valves, also giving these patients an alternative to traditional surgery.

💙 The difference? Better symptoms, longer life and quicker recovery. Visit https://www.private.imperial.nhs.uk/services/cardiac-care/tavi to learn more about TAVI and how our team can support your heart health.

Looking back, my pregnancy was straightforward but I carried a lot of quiet anxiety with me. I wanted everything to be ok and to know my baby was safe - that meant learning to 'surrender' and trust the process, which didn’t always come easily.

Having an anterior placenta made it harder to recognise what “normal movement” felt like at first but it was comforting to know I could visit the Lindo Wing whenever I needed that extra bit of reassurance.

Knowing I had access to leading obstetricians and neonatal specialists gave me such peace of mind - especially as a first-time mum. I’m especially grateful to Mr Digesu for his warmth and humour and to midwives Debbie and Gabriella for their incredible support both before and after birth.

Choosing the Lindo Wing was, without a doubt, the best decision I could have made for my birth experience.

Georgia, first-time mum at The Lindo Wing ✨
