Career breaks aren’t career enders - they’re career builders.

In the latest episode of the Better At Work podcast, our founder Julianne Miles, joins host Aoife O’Brien to share her insights from over 20 years of supporting professionals returning to work after a career break.

Key points from the conversation:

📍90% of career breaks for caring are taken by women. These aren’t “gaps” - they’re periods of growth, skill-building, and rich life experience that shape stronger, more empathetic employees.

📍The 5 stages of career transition. Julianne breaks down the journey returners go through, where people often get stuck and how to move forward with confidence.

📍“Value what you bring that is DIFFERENT, not the same.” Your unique path is your advantage - not something to downplay, but something to own.

This conversation will shift how you think about your career break and career journey.

🎧 Plus, Julianne’s new book Return Journey: How to get back to work and thrive after a career break is out now - full of practical frameworks and advice for anyone navigating this transition.

Listen now on YouTube and Spotify - and share with someone who needs to hear it.

🧭 “Life’s too short” - Why CV gaps are no longer taboo

The recent article by The Times and The Sunday Times explores how career breaks are increasingly recognised as part of a rich professional journey, not a setback.

At Career Returners we’re seeing this in action - and we’re here to support everyone who’s paused their career but is now ready to return.

✨ Key insight from our co-founder Julianne Miles:

“We’re seeing more organisations open to sabbaticals or flexible working… because they want to retain that person longer term.”

📌 What this means for returners:
If you’ve taken time out - for caregiving, travel, study, health or simply to reflect - this gap is increasingly viewed as part of your story, not a barrier

✅ Reflect on how your break added value (skills, perspective, learning), and be ready to articulate it with confidence.

🔗 If you took a career break and are thinking about your next step - join our community at Career Returners (link in comments) and let’s change the narrative together.

👏 Brilliant article in today's Financial Times by Laura Whitcombe, on how employers can meet the challenge - and opportunity - of longer working lives. The key? Focusing on skills not age, to build a skilled and motivated workforce across 40-50 year careers.

🧠 Featuring the inspiring story of Kim Aitchison, one of our amazing returners. After a 30-year career break, Kim returned to work at the Bank of England in her late 50s, defying the advice of friends who said: “Nobody will hire you if you haven’t worked for 30 years.” She found support through our Career Returners Community, and joined a 20-person cohort on our partnership Bank of England Career Returners Programme in 2021.

💬 Kim is still guided by her mother’s advice: “As long as my legs work, I’ll keep walking". She's taken that to heart "just keep learning, keep contributing.”

🌟 Stories like Kim’s show what’s possible when we challenge outdated assumptions and invest in potential at every age.
