It stands for 'Sun Protection Factor' and the number beside it defines the ratio of the minimum amount of energy necessary to produce redness (your minimal erythema dose or MED) when wearing sunscreen, compared to unprotected skin. Theoretically, 30 will shield you 30 times longer than if you wore no protection at all, although this way of thinking has led to countless sunburns, so don't rely on it!

How quickly you would burn depends on various factors including your skin type, the time of day, the month and where you are in the world, so doing the SPF maths accurately is virtually impossible. Plus, the SPF rating is only relevant to burning UVB rays and doesn't say anything about ageing UVA. There are some indications of UVA protection such as the star rating system, but they can be misleading, as they are relative to the SPF of the product. So a 4-star UVA rating on an SPF50 product may actually provide better protection than a 5-star UVArating on an SPF15 product. The UVA circle logo is another indicator about the level of UVA protection you can expect in a product, but again only relative to its UVB protection level. A good broad-spectrum sunscreen should have a minimum 1:3 UVA:UVB protection ratio.

While retinoids are amazing at reducing excess facial oil production, they can make the skin a little more sun sensitive, so should be used in the evening, combined with SPF50 in the morning, and paused when going on a beach holiday in a hot climate.

The other thing to be considerate about is the choice of SPF in the summer, as many will clog pores in oily skin. Heliocare gel or Beauty of Joseon Probiotic Rice SPF50 are good choices for oily skin.

How I do repair a damaged skin barrier?

Use lukewarm water to avoid irritating your skin. Opt for a mild cleanser to preserve essential moisturizing and nourishing substances. Avoid abrasive scrubs that cause micro-tears; instead, use a gentle, leave-on exfoliant.
Choose fragrance-free skincare, as fragrances (including essential oils) can make skin more sensitive and strip away replenishing ingredients. Avoid overusing active ingredients like AHA, BHA, and retinol.
Use them in moderation and at different times of the day (e.g., exfoliant in the morning and retinol at night). Protect your skin from the sun daily with a sunscreen rich in antioxidants and an SPF of 30 or higher, as sun exposure is a major cause of a damaged skin barrier.

Causes of a Damaged Skin Barrier:

External factors can trigger disturbances in your skin’s protective barrier, including air pollution, allergens, irritants, alkaline detergents or soaps, excessive sun exposure, extremely dry or humid environments, over-washing or over-exfoliating, harsh chemicals, certain medications (e.g., steroids), aging, and psychological distress.

Symptoms of a Damaged Skin Barrier:

Recognizing the signs of a damaged skin barrier can help you take steps to repair it. Look out for sensitive, inflamed, or irritated skin, itchiness, very dry skin or scaly patches, bacterial, viral, or fungal skin infections, and acne. If you notice these symptoms, your skin barrier may not be functioning properly, and it’s important to address these issues promptly.

Not only does it deliver high-quality actives into the skin, it’s also formulated in a lightweight base free from oils and silicones, which can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts.”

When it comes to sunburn, dermatologists unanimously agree that prevention is always better than cure.

Sunburn is an acute inflammatory reaction that follows over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation. It causes direct damage to DNA resulting in inflammation and death of skin cells. The risk is higher in equatorial areas or at altitude, particularly in those with fair skin types. Sunburn in childhood or adolescence can double the risk of developing melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, in later life.

Signs and symptoms of sunburn usually develop 2-6 hours after sun exposure and peak at about 12-24 hours. The skin can become hot, red, swollen, tender, and blisters may form. In severe cases of sunburn it is possible to develop dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and secondary skin infection.

• Act Quickly and Get Out of the Sun: Cover up affected areas and stay in the shade. Wear loose cotton clothing to allow the skin to breathe.
• Take Pain Relief: Use painkillers like ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation. Continue for at least 48 hours if no contraindications exist.
• Cool the Skin: Apply a cool compress or take a lukewarm bath/shower. Avoid rubbing; gently pat the skin dry.
• Moisturize: Use unperfumed cream or lotion to soothe the skin. Aloe vera or soy gels can help. Avoid petroleum, benzocaine, or lidocaine products.
• Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol as it worsens dehydration.
• Leave Blisters Alone: Do not pop blisters to avoid infection and scarring. They will heal naturally.

Take care of your body's largest organ by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with at least SPF 30. Avoid the midday sun, and wear protective clothing, a hat, and sunglasses to minimize UV exposure. Your skin will thank you in the long run.
