What is it that makes sticking to diets so difficult?
And what should you do about it?
Most people's answer revolves around willpower: "If only I had more willpower, I'd be able to stick to a diet"
And often when I first meet clients, this is what they are seeking. Someone who will help them to have more willpower.
But the answer isn't more willpower.
Willpower is fragile. You might be able to stick to an unpleasant diet for a few weeks, but all it takes is a busy week at work, a poor night's sleep, a stressful event or getting unwell to throw everything off.
Instead the answer is to stop doing diets that are so unpleasant they require vast amounts of willpower for you to stick to them.
Here's an alternative to dieting:
1. Make a deeper change to the thoughts and behaviours that drive your eating. Rather than trying to stick to a temporary diet, make your day-to-day habits ones that keep you slim (like people you know who manage to maintain their weight without ever dieting)
2. Figure out how to handle specific behaviours that undermine you. The big one here is emotional eating. You could go on a 1000 different diets but until you solve emotional eating, none will work for you.
3. Find the specific eating rhythm that suits you. Most people eat the wrong things at the wrong times and then wonder why it all feels like a struggle.
4. Mindset shift. Do you prioritise everyone else over yourself? Is looking after your health an afterthought that you try and cram into a 2 week deprivation diet. Do you have thoughts of just giving up and learning to live with your weight? These are all signs that your momentum is going the wrong way and it's corrupted your thinking.
