Stuck on the diet merry-go-round?

For those who struggle to get results with dieting, the solution is to abandon the diet approach altogether.

It's a change in mindset.

This mindset shift involves moving from:

Trying to reach a particular weight

to

Trying to change your habits.

Ironically, if you change your habits, you're going to be much more likely to reach and stay at your goal weight.

On the other hand, if you're only focused on the goal weight, then even if you succeed in getting there on a diet, as soon as you reach the goal, if you stop the diet, you start sliding backwards.

Seems simple enough, but most dieters are still stuck in the old mindset.

If you can break free of it, your chances of long-term weight loss are greatly increased.

What is it that makes sticking to diets so difficult?

And what should you do about it?

Most people's answer revolves around willpower: "If only I had more willpower, I'd be able to stick to a diet"

And often when I first meet clients, this is what they are seeking. Someone who will help them to have more willpower.

But the answer isn't more willpower.

Willpower is fragile. You might be able to stick to an unpleasant diet for a few weeks, but all it takes is a busy week at work, a poor night's sleep, a stressful event or getting unwell to throw everything off.

Instead the answer is to stop doing diets that are so unpleasant they require vast amounts of willpower for you to stick to them.

Here's an alternative to dieting:

1. Make a deeper change to the thoughts and behaviours that drive your eating. Rather than trying to stick to a temporary diet, make your day-to-day habits ones that keep you slim (like people you know who manage to maintain their weight without ever dieting)

2. Figure out how to handle specific behaviours that undermine you. The big one here is emotional eating. You could go on a 1000 different diets but until you solve emotional eating, none will work for you.

3. Find the specific eating rhythm that suits you. Most people eat the wrong things at the wrong times and then wonder why it all feels like a struggle.

4. Mindset shift. Do you prioritise everyone else over yourself? Is looking after your health an afterthought that you try and cram into a 2 week deprivation diet. Do you have thoughts of just giving up and learning to live with your weight? These are all signs that your momentum is going the wrong way and it's corrupted your thinking.

3 questions to ask if you want permanent weight loss:

Why would a 2 week diet lead to long-term change?

Why would a diet you hate - ever be a long-term solution?

What's the point losing weight on a diet, only to gain it all back again when you stop?

Some of my clients have been slim all their life and then only started gaining weight *after* they turned 40.

The problem is, for many people in this situation, they end up taking a wrong turn.

So they end up dieting and making food the enemy. They turn managing their weight into an unpleasant ordeal. And worst of all, none of it works. The more they diet, the more their weight goes up.

I often say to clients in this situation, the key is to "get back to you". They have a lifetime of good eating habits, (how else would they have been slim for most of their life). Instead of reinventing the wheel, just get back to what you were doing and make some small adjustments.

Just last week, a client who is in Week 3 of the process, said she caught a glimpse of the way she used to be, (food not a big deal, making good decisions without needing to deprive herself) and she was so happy.

She had always had a healthy relationship with food, and only in the last few years had she lost her way.

Remember, dieting is not going to give you back your healthy relationship with food.
