Take on the London to Brighton Cycle Ride with Team SCTS
14th September 2025

The Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland (SCTS) is at the forefront of life-saving care. Our surgeons operate at the edge of what's possible- mending hearts, fighting lung cancer, rebuilding lives after trauma, transplants and giving children born with heart defects a future.

But we are more than just surgery.
We are education, research, innovation, and advocacy.
We are a family of clinicians and patients working together to transform care—making it faster, fairer, safer.

Everything you raise helps us:
🔹 Support training for the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons
🔹 Helps improve cardiothoracic surgery care
🔹 Champion mental health and wellbeing in the surgical workforce

Join us, cycle with purpose, and help change the future of cardiothoracic care

SCTS supports National Lung Cancer Screening

Aman Coonar, SCTS President, with Tom Newsom-Davis, BTOG President, joined forces with patients, clinical leaders, commissioners and politicians to celebrate 35 years of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Lung cancer screening is changing lung cancer from a late presenting disease with low cure rates to presentation with early disease which is much more effectively treated. We need to make sure that all appropriate patients take up the offer of lung cancer screening.

'Minimally invasive thoracic surgery combined with Very Enhanced Recovery in Thoracic Anaesthesia & Surgery will transform the way we treat many lung cancer patients. Scars will be smaller, recovery will be faster and cure rates will be much higher. Patients will spend less time in hospital which will save resources and be good for the overall system as well'.

Happy Nurses Day 2025!

Each year on May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, we come together to honour the extraordinary hard work and care contributions made by nurses across the globe.

Here is a picture of some of our past and present SCTS NAHP leaders, these wonderful ladies still inspire, educate and support our Cardiothoracic teams Nationally.

Importantly, today is a day to thank you all for your contribution to cardiothoracic patients and for being the backbone of our healthcare system, providing care, compassion to patients at their most vulnerable moments. You are all amazing!

We, the Women in Cardiothoracic Surgery (WiCTS) Committee within SCTS, stand firmly behind the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s Turning the Tide initiative.

Sexual misconduct has no place in our profession. We support the call for a safer, more respectful, and inclusive culture in surgery—one where all colleagues can thrive without fear of harassment or discrimination.

We applaud the RCS England for introducing a clear Code of Conduct, offering 24/7 confidential support, and promoting bystander intervention training. These are not just policies—they are essential steps toward real cultural change.

We invite all our colleagues across surgery to read the report, reflect, and commit to this much-needed transformation. Let’s turn the tide together.
