Home Instead's ethos is to 'change the face of ageing' and it is with extreme passion and commitment that we are here in your local community. Just because you are elderly doesn't mean you have to stop living. By providing a service of companionship and care to someone when they need it is so simple but can be got so wrong! I have experienced the wrong side of care for both my parents who I lost to motor neurone disease and breast cancer a few years ago. It was at a time when I had two small boys and not enough time to give to my parents. I had to place my trust in others' and when good care is not provided, it can have such an impact on everyone concerned. I want Home Instead to become your trusted companion for your loved one and for us to be an extension of your own family. We will do what we say we are going to do when we say we are going to! The same person will come at the right time on the right day to do what you want. Our clients include individuals who have come to us themselves, older children who have referred their parents or relatives, people who receive direct payments from the local authority and clients referred to us by the Primary Care Trust. Regardless of how you come to Home Instead, it is my goal to provide the same level of help and care that I wanted for my parents. At Home Instead Wimbledon and Kingston, we know that spending time together in the kitchen can spark old memories and help older adults stay engaged in everyday life.

And Sheila’s Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash Soup is a great recipe to make side by side: simple to prepare and full of natural vitamins that support energy and wellbeing during the colder months.

Ingredients:
Sweet potato, butternut squash, red pepper, yellow/orange pepper, coriander or basil, black pepper.

Method:
1. Cover the vegetables with boiling water and simmer until soft.
2. Add herbs and black pepper.
3. Allow to cool slightly, then blend until smooth.
4. Serve with a granary roll or a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

Here are a couple of fun activities our Care Professionals love to enjoy with their clients when the weather is wetter than ideal:

• Embrace arts and crafts. Autumn is the perfect season for creativity! Whether it’s starting a new knitting project or collecting colourful leaves on a nature walk to make a collage, staying creative is a wonderful way to brighten the day.
• Join a sing-along. Home Instead Wimbledon & Kingston host a Love to Sing event every Monday and Friday, where attendees can make friends and enjoy singing together.

As Bonfire Night was on Wednesday, this weekend is likely to bring more displays. Whilst the sky fills with colour and sparkle, let’s make sure everyone enjoys the celebrations safely and comfortably.

Some tips to enjoy this weekend safely:
- If you are setting off fireworks at home, try to do so at reasonable times. While you can continue until 11pm, finishing your celebrations earlier can be considerate to neighbours who go to bed sooner.
- Keep pets safe indoors where possible. Even just closing the curtains can help make anxious animals calmer!
