YNT Fitness Ltd Level 4 Specialist in Obesity and Diabetes Personal Trainer, Level3 GP Client Referrals, Level 3 Adv I wasn't always into fitness.

Hi there,

My name's Anthony Ioannides (pronounced You-a-Need-This). I have created this page to try and give you a bit of insight into my life and the history behind why I have chosen to become a personal trainer. I didn't take up a million different sports growing up, in fact, the most active thing I did as a teenager was huff and puff like most teenagers do complaining that life just isn't fair. Now... I believe balance is everything. I train hard and take care of myself but I enjoy my food more now than ever before. Many people want to tell you that there is a crisis going on and that everyone is getting fatter. I want to tell you that I have lost 60kgs (9.5 Stone) and can tell you that it wasn't a chore, I didn't do any fad diets, I didn't stop eating things I loved. If you want to know the true secret to weight loss I'm more than happy to share it with you. I am passionate about fitness and love finding new ways to push myself. At the end of each session I like to smile and say I enjoyed that rather than say never again. I have overcome Arthritis in my shoulders and hip and am still going strong. I like to be living proof that anything is possible and change can happen. Getting fitter should not be a chore, it should be enjoyable and bring you happiness.

Today I had a lovely day in the sun and took these two photos of different times of the day and it made me thought of how we should view ourselves. In one photo the tide is out and in the other the tide has come in allowing the boats to float and sail out of the harbour. This is exactly how I like to view my health and fitness journey. There’s a phase for everything. Times when I work hard, times when I train less, times when I keep to a “diet” and times where I simply enjoy food for the pleasure it gives. There’s different times in life for different goals. Just like the tide rolls in and out, we too should relax our thinking that we must workout, we must not eat, we must be doing something we’re not. Sometimes all we need to do is relax, trust in the tide of our life being exactly where we’re supposed to be and when the time is right the tide will come in and we can sail off toward our goal. Sail before the tide is in and you’re simply pushing a boat through sand 💁🏼‍♂️

When it’s sunny and all you want to do is just relax and indulge in the sunshine… remember that sometimes a workout beforehand can help keep those indulgences in check. We all need to enjoy life especially now lockdown is easing but we can also push ourselves harder than before in our workouts. Today I had a nice relaxing drive in the sun with the roof down, hit the gym hard and did the recommended RX weighs for the session (that was rough 🤢) and after I had got my breath back it was out for some lunch. They say balance is everything and I agree. Although the rich foods aren’t going to help weight loss, they definitely help me mentally to unwind from the stress of life. Have a wonderful heatwave week 💪🏼

Why leg training sucks….. put simply the legs are huge and require serious weight to be shifted in order to really illicit any real change to them. I’ve always considered my legs to be a weak point in my training. You know that horrible burn you feel when training? All that lactic acid? Well… that’s when you start counting the reps and the work begins. Leg training is a special kind of focus when done correctly. Some days I have it, some days I don’t. If you want to get stronger legs I recommend you don’t just train heavy but work towards building a full range of motion (even if it’s light or body weight), hitting those high repetitions of 15+ and finding that uncomfortable zone and pushing through it. Leg training has been my solution to chronic back pain. Making them function and hold me in place when I move around. Having the glutes actually work in my day to day. When you finally push past your limits and you get to then end of your workout there’s a strange sense of satisfaction to it. This of course isn’t for everyone, but for those who know the struggle, the pain is real.

Rare footage of me actually doing cardio. Now that the gyms are open again I’m enjoying going back to hitting cardio via CrossFit sessions. I find this the most effective way for me to get cardiovascular exercise into my routine. Now if you ask me which I think is better, my answer is that both have their benefits and by doing both you’ll get an all round level of fitness. Weightlifting to me is most important as I’m a massive foodie and I’m always going to eat eat eat. How do u burn calories? By having a certain level of muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the more you need to eat to maintain it. On the flip side how do you get better at weight training? Getting that cardio in. By having a higher cardiovascular fitness level you’ll recover faster from your sessions and that means... more ability to add volume to your training. The reasons to utilise both variations of training are endless but my biggest take home to any exercise is you have to enjoy it! If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it!

Today’s lost at 190kg was brutal. I didn’t enjoy it one bit. The tenderness in my right lat wasn’t happy either and told me not to try any more and rest. The goal was 200kg for April but I think it’s going to take a little longer. Still hard work and still pushing myself as much as I can.

Chest supported rows. This has to be one of my favourite back exercises for many reasons:

1. Using a bench allows me to stabilise my body better than a regular bent over row.
2. Using the bench I can drive my chest into the pad allowing a hard contraction in the back.
3. Gravity is against me which means I’m at a great angle to have constant tension in the lats.

Obviously there’s more to it than just that but such a great exercise and the set up is pretty easy.

7 years ago I decided that I wasn’t happy with the way commercial gyms wanted me to train clients. I took the term personal trainer... personally. I always believed that I wanted the person themselves to matter and that it was an honour to be a part of their . To have someone put their trust in you and ask you to help them achieve something important to them is something I have always felt so privileged to be a part of and seeing clients achieve those goals really made me excited for them. This is where it all started. In my leaking conservatory. Super hot summers and freezing winters. Where I got to train clients my way. To make them the focus and to say no, they’re not a number in a gym but a human being that mattered. This was my . This was my first steps into who I am now and it’s a massively proud moment for me.

Another great little use for the pakulski bench by stretching your chest and allowing the scapula to move freely while you relax into it. 😜

Over the Christmas period and the fact that they have stuck us in lockdown yet again I hate to admit it but the stress of it all got to me. Subconsciously I have seen the stress adding up over the month and this has caused me to eat way more than I needed and barely move. I stopped my workouts and traded it for a daily massive bar of white chocolate toblerone 🥴 a month later and I’ve ballooned up with lots of inflammation and weight gain and tired weak muscles that don’t want to move. Today it’s time to get right back to it and start realising that life is good. Things aren’t what they seem and that we are all going through something. Now isn’t the time to beat ourselves up but build each other up. So today I’m starting to be positive and get back into some hard workouts.
