🎖️ Congratulations Owen! Earlier this month Owen Sutton was awarded The British Citizen Award, for his advocacy and support of people with brain tumours and charitable fundraising efforts.

Owen was diagnosed with a brain tumour at 20 years old, after multiple treatments with challenging outcomes, he was referred to The Sarah Cannon Research Institute, part of HCA Healthcare UK, where he joined a clinical trial with us. He continues this trial, and his condition has stabilised.

Determined and resilient, Owen has become a passionate fundraiser and advocate for change. He is one of 21 young ambassadors for The Brain Tumour Charity, orchestrating various fundraising and awareness events, raising over £20,000 for the charity and the organisation Headway. Owen’s story proves that one voice, even born out of suffering, can make a change.

“This award truly means so much to me. When I began raising awareness for brain tumours, it was simply about helping others and honouring those affected. To be recognised for that work makes me incredibly proud and motivates me to keep pushing forward.” - Owen

From all the team at Sarah Cannon Research Institute UK and HCA UK, Congratulations Owen, and thank you for your advocacy. We’re incredibly proud of all you are achieving.

“It is an honour to be in a position to be able to lead the Pharmacy team within the Lister Hospital and it’s hugely rewarding to be able to make a significantly positive impact our patients” - Krishna, Head of Pharmacy, The Lister Hospital

Meet Krishna, she has been with HCA UK for over 10 years, starting her career with us as a Clinical Pharmacist in 2012. This World Pharmacist Day, she shares more about her role and how important it is in contributing to our patient pathways.

“Each day begins with a team check-in to align on patient care. I will join safety and improvement meetings, and I still step in clinically, so you might find me on the wards supporting patients.

Our Pharmacy team plays a key role in safe and effective medication management across the hospital. We lead on clinical audits, review patient incident data, and work closely with colleagues from other disciplines to drive improvements in practice. We also support education and training for prescribers, nurses, and AHPs - helping ensure our staff feel confident and our patients receive the best care.

For us, everything comes back to the patient journey. At the Lister Fertility Clinic, for example, we introduced a medication delivery service to reduce waiting times and make the process smoother for patients.

For our inpatients, we’ve worked hard to improve discharge support. We provide clear medication leaflets and one-to-one counselling, so patients feel confident about using their medicines safely at home. We’ve also developed new pathways, working with nursing teams, to make sure patients can still get their medication outside of normal pharmacy hours. These changes have been vital in making the discharge process safer, smoother, and more patient-centred.

The world of Pharmacy allows you to gain experience in different sectors and the skills you learn will be hugely transferable to a variety of different pathways.

My single piece of advice would be - to take every opportunity that you are given, and if you are considering a career in Pharmacy, go for it!"

💙 Thank you to Krishna, our Pharmacy teams and Pharmacists across HCA UK for all your hard work and dedication to patient care.

"Our team here at The Wellington Hospital supports patients at all stages of their journey, from early rehabilitation to ongoing, long-term care. With a strong multidisciplinary team (MDT), we provide personalised, patient-centred support tailored to each person’s goals, including a dedicated spinal cord injury team."

At our Neuro Rehab Centre, we see many patients living with spinal cord injuries. This Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, Mandy shares how the team at the centre combines innovative technology with compassionate, patient-centred care to support recovery.

"Some of the services we offer include gait retraining thanks to innovative robotic technology such as the Indego® exoskeleton and the Lokomat® which both often helps our patients take steps for the first time since their injury.

We also offer specialised clinics such as our Complex Posture and Seating Team, who work closely with patients to assess and provide the most suitable wheelchair, whether that means additional support, a more active chair, or power add-ons to help with independence.

Then we have our Spasticity Clinic, where patients receive tailored support to manage spasticity and spasms. This includes use of our Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike for upper and lower limb muscle strength, tailored standing programmes to support bone and soft tissue health and regulation of autonomic function, and Botox treatment where appropriate.

Accessibility is a priority for us, which is highlighted in our gym space with the Equalizer (a multi-gym designed for wheelchair users by a wheelchair user) and an adaptable kitchen to help patients gain independence in tasks they would need when returning home.

Our priority is to deliver client-centred care that empowers people with spinal cord injury to achieve their goals and live meaningful, fulfilling lives." 💙

We were delighted to see superstar Ambrose recently complete his hospital stay, following a smooth recovery from bladder augmentation surgery (ileocystoplasty) and ongoing renal management. This intricate procedure included the creation of a Mitrofanoff channel to enable catheterisation and long-term bladder function. ✨

Ambrose’s success is the result of careful planning and the dedication of a wide team working together. Most importantly, it shows the courage and positivity he and his family brought to every step of the journey. We were especially grateful to receive such kind words from his family, and we’re so pleased to have been part of his care. We wish him all the very best as he enjoys life back at home.

📣 Medical First 📣 We’re proud to be participating in a groundbreaking clinical trial using Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocyte (TIL) Therapy to target metastatic lung cancer.

This groundbreaking cellular therapy treatment harnesses the body’s own TIL cells which are present in tumours, using them to target cancer cells. The TIL cells are surgically removed from the patient’s own tumour, before being expanded and multiplied in a laboratory and reinfused to target the cancer cells. TIL therapy was first approved by the FDA for the treatment of Melanoma in 2024, this new trial is looking at its efficacy in treating advanced non-small-cell lung cancer.

This treatment is a complex therapy that requires the expertise of our clinical research team, surgical colleagues and acute inpatient cancer care teams across the HCA UK network. We’re proud to have treated one of the first patients on this trial, who has had a very positive initial response to treatment.

Will Pressley, CEO, HCA UK Cancer Services said: "This milestone exemplifies the collaborative excellence that defines HCA Healthcare UK. By bringing together the surgical expertise at The Harley Street Clinic, the advanced inpatient cancer care capabilities at London Bridge Hospital and the pioneering research of Sarah Cannon Research Institute UK, we're able to offer patients access to groundbreaking treatments like TIL therapy. This represents our unwavering commitment to advancing cancer care and providing hope to patients facing the most challenging diagnoses through innovative cellular therapies that harness the power of their own immune systems."
