“I don’t want people to suffer in silence. You never know what people are going through and sometimes they don’t feel they can talk to their family or friends. I want to feel that I have listened to and supported someone who needed it.”

This and today on we’re focusing on mental health and sharing some reflections from Paulo Silva, Head of Hotel Services at The Harborne Hospital.

Paulo began his career with HCA UK in 2010 as part of the concierge team at London Bridge Hospital. Today, he leads Hotel Services at The Harborne Hospital and is one of our dedicated Mental Health First Aiders, playing a vital role in supporting colleagues across the hospital.

“As part of my role, I work closely with most departments and am frequently seen across the hospital site. This visibility means that many people know who I am and feel comfortable approaching me if they need support. I aim to be seen as approachable and understanding, this for me is a key element of being a good manager.

Mental health is something that matters deeply to me. Like anyone else, men face anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress, but societal expectations often make it harder for them to open up. We’ve all heard phrases like ‘real men don’t cry’ or ‘tough it out’ - attitudes that can stop people from seeking help when they need it most. I believe that opening up can break stigma and ultimately, saves lives. It’s vital that we normalise emotional honesty and create safe spaces where everyone feels able to talk about how they’re really feeling.

Being a Mental Health First Aider allows me to make a positive difference. I’m fortunate to be in a position where I can support others, and this in turn contributes to my own wellbeing. Sometimes, simply being there for someone and listening can make all the difference - often, talking things through helps bring clarity, and for others, it can be the first step to seeking further support.

People can feel overwhelmed by what they’re going through, but breaking challenges down into smaller, more manageable parts can help them regain a sense of control. For me, this role is also a way of giving something back. My colleagues have given me so much over the years, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to support them when they need it most.”

Protecting yourself at a vulnerable and emotional time is understandable. In the UK, we’re fortunate to have one of the strictest fertility treatment regulatory frameworks in the world, but these regulations only apply if you choose a licensed fertility clinic.

“I get to work with an amazing group of clinicians, radiographers, and senior leaders across HCA UK. Collaborating with such talented people to deliver outstanding patient care is what makes this role so rewarding.

This , we’re shining a spotlight on Tej Bangay, Head of Imaging Service Line at HCA Healthcare UK, who shares how imaging innovation has transformed the way we care for our patients and how we stay at the forefront of imaging excellence.

“We’re transforming diagnostics through advanced imaging and collaborative care. From MRI and CT to ultrasound and mammography, we provide walk-in and rapid access to a full range of imaging services, with Consultant Radiologists offering fast, accurate reporting. Our multidisciplinary approach ensures that every patient benefits from collective expertise and a seamless journey through diagnosis and treatment.

“Imaging technology has changed beyond recognition over the years. We’ve moved from traditional film-based X-rays to fully digital systems that shift alone has been transformative. It means faster results, better image quality, and ultimately, better patient outcomes. Advances such as high-resolution CT, MRI, and 3D imaging tools have made diagnostics more precise and efficient than ever before.

“For me, one of the most transformative innovations has been PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems). Gone are the days of film and physical storage. now, images are instantly available across our network. It’s revolutionised how we collaborate, speeding up diagnoses and improving patient care.” - Tej

At HCA Healthcare UK, we’re proud of how far we’ve come and even more excited for what’s ahead. This year alone, we’ve carried out over 300,000 scans, averaging 30,000 every month across our network. Supported by a dedicated team of over 200 radiographers, we continue to drive forward innovation, excellence and compassionate care.

To all of our radiography teams, including our Diagnostic Radiographers, Therapy Radiographers, Sonographers, and Nuclear Medicine Technologists, thank you for your incredible dedication, expertise, and compassion you bring to your work everyday 💙

This National Fertility Week, we’re shining a spotlight on fertility innovation as we introduce our new piece of equipment at The Lister Fertility Clinic at The Portland Hospital!

📽️ In this video, our embryologist Dr Charlotte Hall, Consultant Embryologist and Lab Manager shares more about our latest addition to the lab, the Nikon ECLIPSE Ti2-I inverted microscope which is used in ICSI procedures.

🔬 What is ICSI?
Intracytoplasmic s***m injection (ICSI) is a specialised form of IVF where a single healthy s***m is injected directly into an egg using a fine needle. In regular IVF, s***m and eggs are combined together in a dish to allow fertilisation to take place as they come into contact.

The resulting embryos are cultured in our lab, and then a fertilised embryo is transferred to the female partner’s womb.

This technique can help overcome male fertility challenges, such as low s***m count or motility issues, giving couples an improved chance of successful fertilisation.

We’re thrilled to be the first fertility clinic in the UK to introduce this remarkable technology into our laboratory - another step forward in our mission to provide world-class fertility treatment and compassionate care. 💙

Exceptional patient-centred care means more than just clinical excellence – it's about truly knowing and understanding the people we care for.

At Leaders in Oncology Care, we build genuine relationships with our patients and their loved ones, taking time to understand what would improve their care with us, including their values, preferences and any specific needs we can support them with.

As we reflect on 20 years of LOC, Nurses Amber Domingo and Alvaro Alla share what patient-centred care means to them, and how these trusted relationships can translate into a better experience and enhanced clinical support for their patients.

“A lot of patients will experience symptoms before a stroke occurs, typically these will be what we call, a TIA - Transient ischaemic attack. This is when there is a short-lasting interruption of blood supply to part of the brain. Then when the blood supply is restored, the brain recovers."

The Harley Street Clinic, The Harborne Hospital

Twenty years ago, Leaders in Oncology Care started with a single centre in London. Today, we've grown into a network of several centres across London, Manchester and Birmingham.

Fifteen years ago, we opened our first site outside of London in Manchester, through a partnership between one of Europe’s leading cancer centres - The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, and HCA Healthcare UK, bringing together world-leading expertise with a patient-centred approach to care. And most recently, we've expanded to The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham.

As we mark our milestone 20th anniversary, Dr Vivek Misra, Consultant Clinical Oncologist The Christie Private Care, part of HCA Healthcare UK, explains how this geographical growth means more people can access the same level of expertise and exceptional care, across the UK.
