The Barkantine Birth centre

The Barkantine Birth centre This page aims to promote the Barkantine by sharing our news and other birth-related posts. If you are interested please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

The Barkantine is a freestanding, NHS, midwife led birth centre located on the isle of dogs. We support low risk women to birth naturally in a home from home environment. We do not have a catchment area meaning that we can accept women from any area as long as they are happy to travel to us in labour!! We have 5 rooms all with en-suite facilities, a birthing pool and a double bed so that someone can stay with you following the birth. We opened our doors in 2008 and since then we have had over 2000 wonderful births. The aim of this page is to bring together people that have used the centre, past/present staff and anyone in support of natural birth and freestanding birth centres. We offer tours for women interested in birthing with us after 20 weeks. Unfortunately we are unable to answer any individual pregnancy related questions on this page. If you do have a question or query please contact your midwifery team.

Our Barkantine Birth Centre is experiencing some operational pressures at present and will be closed until further notice. Our priority is keeping our patients and staff safe, so we thank you for your understanding. Women who were due to visit the centre will be contacted individually and our other maternity services at The Royal London Hospital remain open.

💫✨ Alaine’s birth story ✨💫

“We think back on both our birth experiences often and fondly. Both babies were born at the Barkantine, and both times they went exactly as we had hoped.

I would like to thank you and the team for the support in my choice to give birth in the water, with minimal intervention.

Our children were born 1 year, seven months and 4 days apart. Both births took place in the pool in room 4! The babies came into the world as calmly as one could hope.

The space and facilities are world class and yet so homely.

The staff are amazing. Their confidence and competency inspired and influenced me to confidently give birth without epidural or medical intervention.

This experience was very empowering and something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I can’t thank you and the team enough!”

✨💫 Danielle’s birth story 💫✨

“My second time birthing at the Barkantine was just as amazing as the first. The midwives consistently provided support throughout my pregnancy. I couldn't recommend them enough!

And a massive thank you to Chanel for safely bringing both of my blessings into this world.♥️”

We are back! 👋🏻 💫

“I have taken a short break on our social media platforms recently, where the team and myself have been working hard to adapt to changes, challenges and supporting lots of births! 🏥

Our team at The Barkantine has evolved a lot over the last few months. We have seen some of our Midwives explore new avenues in their careers and others progress into new roles within the Barkantine. 🧳

We are excited to share with you our Barkantine Midwives and will be posting “meet your Midwife” bios over the next few weeks to introduce/reintroduce you to our team. 👩🏼‍⚕️

May has been our busiest month for births in 2022 so far! We have seen many familiar faces this month, with women returning to birth their second/third babies with us, and each has been so special. 👶🏻

Have you had a positive birth experience with us, and would you be happy to share it with others on Instagram and Facebook? 📱 📷

Please drop me a private message and I will get back to you. 📧 🖊

Looking forward to catching up with everyone soon. Thankyou, as ever, for all your support. 🌸”

💫✨ Poppy’s birth story ✨💫

“I went into labour at 3am the night after my due date. After 19 hours of early labour at home, (with regular check-ins with the Barkantine team on the phone), we were invited in and my partner drove us to the birth centre.

We were met by our midwives Miriam and Cathy who instantly put us at ease. They stayed with me while by partner parked the car and then they let us settle into our rhythm. My waters broke soon after.

Miriam and Cathy were incredibly supportive throughout. They empowered me to have the birth that I had hoped for and Loxely was born in the birth pool at 4:30 am on 1 March.

I had to transfer to the Royal London for stitches, and Miriam and Cathy travelled with me. I cannot thank them enough for their care. It made all of the difference.

We returned to the Barkantine for postnatal care and breast feeding support, which was invaluable. The Barkantine team were empathetic, generous, knowledgable and supportive at every stage.

I am so glad that We chose the Barkantine Birth Centre for Loxley’s birth. I am certain that my positive birth and breast feeding journey was made possible because of the care and support I was given by this amazing team of midwives and other staff.”
