How Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) Works…
A child is walking down the street.
Suddenly, a dog lunges.
Before the child has a thought, the midbrain survival system activates.
👀 Superior Colliculus
“What is that?”
(orienting to movement)
⚠️ Anterior Cingulate Cortex
“Is this safe or dangerous?”
(threat evaluation)
🔥 Periaqueductal Gray (PAG)
“I’m in danger!”
(initiates the survival response)
The signal then moves to the amygdala, and the nervous system shifts state:
🟢 Green – safe / connected
🟡 Yellow – mobilize / fight-flight
🟠 Orange – conflict (go + stop)
🔴 Red – freeze / shutdown
As the state shifts, parts emerge to manage the danger.
Terrified.
Ashamed.
Angry.
Only after all of this does the mind make meaning:
“Dogs are dangerous.”
NB: I am not safe
The belief didn’t start the reaction.
It explains the survival state that already happened.
This is why modern trauma work integrates:
DBR
Polyvagal Theory
Parts Work
EMDR
Trauma therapists are starting to talk a lot about DBR.
Why?
Because it explains what happens in the brain before beliefs, parts, and even Polyvagal states organize the experience.

Because we don’t just work with beliefs.
We map the survival pattern that created them.
