Autumn is marching ahead. I love observing the season’s changing faces, from the colours of the leaves to their eventual departure, to the fungi and horse chestnuts. It truly is a beautiful time of year!🍁

“Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.”― Stanley Horowitz

As the trees lose their leaves, this symbolic gesture of letting go invites us to do the same. The energetic movement of this season draws everything downward, including our mood! It is common to suffer from sadness and grief at this time; the emotions associated with the Metal element. Given the prevalence of respiratory conditions with the dampness of the season, the Chinese Tradition asks us to nourish our Lungs, the gateway between our inner and outer worlds and its Yang organ pair, the Large Intestine.

The final workshop of my Five Elements series; Autumn & the Metal element will be Sunday 16 November 2025 2.30pm - 4.30pm in which we will celebrate this most wonderful time of year when nature retreats steadily inward. Please do join me if you would like to learn more about this season and the best way to support ourselves through it and prepare for the colder months ahead.

The workshop will cover:
☯️ A short ‘Yang’ (active) sequence of gentle movements/ postures and some Qi Gong
☯️ A longer ‘Yin’ (passive) practice where we hold the poses for a longer duration in stillness
☯️ Guided breath work (pranayama) appropriate for the time of year
☯️ A guided lying meditation - Yoga Nidra. The aim of a Yoga Nidra is to bring the body into a deep state of blissful relaxation.
☯️ Introduction to how the Five Element Theory for that season works
☯️ Explanation of which particular organ pairs we nourish at this time of year
☯️ Practical ways in which we can support our bodies and minds during this season

The precision of Iyengar … fortuitous that I was able to join Julie Hodges Iyengar Yoga Intensive today. We worked on forward bends, deeper twists and back bends. It is always such an enriching experience learning from Julie as she is so generous in how she shares her wealth of experience.

Iyengar has given me the ability to find precision by navigating my body using its skeletal structure (as well as a creative use and love of props 😍). My automatic body scan while in a pose takes me to muscular sensation: feeling what and how to engage. Tuning into this deeper layer of bony markers is subtly different but very effective as when we move from here the muscles take care of themselves!

Both of the poses in the pics above ⬆️ are named after sages in Indian Mythology (Marichi and Bharadvaja) and as such, I feel that they call us to connect to our inner wisdom while practising.

“It is through alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self and intelligence.” [BKS Iyengar]

The Autumnal changes are gathering momentum and the colours are glorious this year. 🍂

We are delighted to share that our next Restorative Yin & Sound Bath takes place on Friday 7 November and it will be our last one before the festive season.

We will be working with the energy of the Ta**us full moon, which asks that we listen to our own inner wisdom; sometimes buried deep down inside to try and illuminate our authentic selves.

“Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It’s about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.” [Brené Brown]

As we’ll be transitioning towards the winter months; the most yin time of year, we’ll be looking to nourish the organs we associate with Autumn in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lung and the large intestine as well as those associated with Winter, the kidney and the bladder, both in an effort to stoke our immunity and build a strong foundation of yin energy by focusing on the kidney energy channel.

We look forward to welcoming you. 🙏🏻

Kate had the honour of offering a Grounding & Nourishing with the Earth Element Yin Workshop to this wonderful group of yogis on Saturday.

Two and half hours of gentle movement, Yin Yoga practice, Qi Gong, breathwork and Yoga Nidra seemed to fly by in a blissful haze, immersed in the ancient wisdom of the Chinese Tradition’s Five Elements.

We invited our bodies to ground and centre and deeply reconnect to the earth’s rhythms, as nature begins to wilt and wither around us. We found that place where we feel nourished, supported and held. This is how we transition to the colder, darker months to come.

“September [is] promising. The beginning of a gorgeous and necessary decay.   The edge of triumph before the deep rest.”  [Victoria Erickson]

Hoping to offer some additional seasonal workshops going forward. Let us know if this would interest you.

Excited to announce that our next Restorative Yin and Sound Bath Event will be on Friday 3 October: 7.45pm -9.30pm.

As we move towards the Autumn Equinox in the middle of next month, we can feel the temperatures starting to drop and the showers becoming a little more frequent. August and September are seen as very transitional months of the year.

As you settle back into your post summer routines, you may feel ready to embrace the slower pace of life and offer yourself a deeper form of rest and self-nourishment. If that resonates with you, please do come and join us for this truly nurturing experience. ✨

We will be celebrating the Hunter’s Moon, which falls in the zodiac sign of Aries ♈️, with its big, bold, fiery energy. We will be embracing the mellow richness of Autumn, as we savour the changing landscape of colour before all the leaves fall. Following nature’s lead, we are encouraged to let go of the light and warmth that summer brings.

At the beginning of August we celebrated Lammas, the traditional cross quarter festival which marks the first harvest and the height of the summer season. This festival sits exactly midway between Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox and ushers in fifth of the seasons according to the Chinese Tradition; Late Summer. This fifth season is typified by the subtly declining temperatures with cooler mornings and evenings and the ripening fruit, ready for picking.

Late summer, is very much a time to ground, centre and rebalance after the intense activity and outpouring of energy (yang) of the summer period. We look to nourish the stomach and the spleen, both instrumental to our immune system, fortifying us in preparation of the colder months ahead.

Join me for a practical exploration of the fifth season in the form of:
🍇Breathwork
🌾Yang (active) yoga practice
🍇Yin (passive) yoga practice
🌾Acupressure points; and
🍇Yoga Nidra (lying meditation).

We’ll discuss optimal ways in which to support our bodies during this transitional period and sample some seasonal food & drink.

“May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
May the clarity of light be yours,
May the fluency of the ocean be yours,
May the protection of the ancestors be yours.
And so may a slow
Wind work these words
Of love around you,
An invisible cloak
To mind your life.”
[John O’Donohue]

What a beautiful celebration of the enduring power of the sun! ☀️

We worked with the expansive and liberating energy of the Sagittarius ♐️ Full Moon, encouraging us to let go of everything holding us back from being the fullest version of ourselves.

As we bear witness to the Sun moving through its cycle; climbing to its highest point in the heavens for the Solstice this weekend ushering in Cancer season (Cancer being the mother energy), we considered our relationship with Mother Earth. The Lakota Native American tribe offer this prayer:
“Grandfather, Great Spirit, fill us with light. Teach us to walk the soft earth as relatives to all that lives.”

It was a fitting final Restorative Yin and Sound Bath event before our summer pause. Thank you so much to all the wonderful souls who support our events. 🙏🏻

We’ll return in the Autumn for our next event. Watch this space!

Love & gratitude

Within all yoga exploration, there are lessons to be learned … sometimes physical, sometimes mental, sometimes emotional and sometimes all of them at once! So many methods under the yoga umbrella and indeed, not all will appeal to everyone.

“Yoga is the journey of self, through the self to the self.” Bhagavad Gita

Kurunta, the use of fixed ropes in Iyengar is a very powerful way of illustrating where you can find space and movement while anchoring another part of the body with the ropes. I tap into the wisdom of Julie Hodges at Putney Iyengar Yoga; an incredibly down to earth teacher whose matter of fact explanations land well with me as she prompts us continually to look for internal cues.

We had been playing with versions some inverted of hanumanasana (splits) and supta kurmasana (sleeping tortoise) with such intelligent progressions that before I realised it, I was in the full asana! We worked with a fascinating breath analytical technique to point us to which part of the body needed to work more deeply.

What a beautiful way to spend last Sunday! 🙏🏻
I was gifted such a wonderful group who were keen to explore the Fire 🔥 element of the summer season in the Five Elements Yin Yang ☯️ workshops.

We embodied the solar Yang of summer with some breath and movement, the cooling stillness in Yin followed by a long luxurious Yoga Nidra.

Nourishing heart, small intestine, heart protector and triple burner energy channels… and embracing the fullness of life with joy!

Huge thank you to all the gorgeous folk who joined me.

We will be exploring the Earth 🌍 element of Late Summer on Sunday 7 September 2.30-4.30pm. Follow link in bio to book.

23/05/2025

The way yoga was taught many years ago was for a teacher to hand down their teachings to a student either on a one to one or a small group basis. Krishnamacharya, who we consider to be the Grandfather of Modern Postural Yoga taught his students Patabhi Jois, BKS Iyengar and Desikachar in this manner. Each one of those lineages continued in a similar vein until yoga became popularised in the West and the ratios of student to teacher grew.

In Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, the Mysore tradition continues to encourage having one teacher. There are many benefits to having one teacher but for me for a number of reasons, it’s been difficult to maintain. Teachers giving up teaching, mysore programmes folding, distances to travel, not having a teacher to go to when I want and I’m able to practice - I never underestimate how tricky this can be when you’re a householder … so many moving parts to consider rather than just yourself.

Self-practice has therefore become an essential part of my life, my foundation, relying on me and my inner wisdom. Finding the discipline and consistency myself … listening to my needs and responding in the best way I can. Sometimes, it’s the heat of a dynamic postural practice, sometimes it’s the cool and slow pace of yin, sometimes it’s the grounding effect of pranayama or the centering of seated meditation, sometimes is the floating allure of aerial or the precision of Iyengar or the deep rest of restorative and Yoga Nidra. I count my blessings for having so many amazing teachers in my life but my intuition is my best teacher. Placing my trust in it amidst the noise of life is an ongoing practice in itself.

Marichyasana D is named after the sage, a reminder to all to connect to our inner wisdom.

Summer is a time when our energy naturally flows outwards with the increasing intensity of sunlight and warmth and the abundance of nature.  Not suprisingly, it is a season of open heartedness, characterised by the emotion of joy!

If you are curious about how Summer and its representative element Fire are considered in Traditional Chinese Medicine, we will look at this and learn some different practices to get the most out of our bodies this season,m. I invite you to join me for the third of my 5 seasonal mini-retreat workshops, Summer and the Fire 🔥  Element, which takes place on Sunday 8 June 2.30-4.30pm.  BOOKING LINK IN BIO ⬆️

“Summertime, when the living is easy.
When life is at its bountiful peak and days are so
deliciously long, there is no end to the promise
they hold. Summer is the time to be alive, to make hay
while the sun shines and to fill your energy stores with
memories of joy, which will fill the otherwise empty
hearths of your heart with fire, all winter long. Do not
let worries or fears stop you from embracing the sun,
the joy, you so deserve, my friends. You are gifted
many summers in your life, but never quite enough.
You deserve to live them. To feel them. Summertime
when the living is easy, so live easy”

There are many wisdoms drawn from of Eastern tradition designed to help us opening our hearts to joy and abundance this season. Let’s explore them together! DM me for more details

A little snapshot of practice while I was away … struggling with my permanently stiff shoulders especially when attempting deeper backbends calls for some radical prep work (dwi pada viparita dandasana); well, a stab at it anyway! 🤣 It is a very effective way at opening into the upper chest and armpit area!

I still have lots of work to do at lifting my shoulders more and sending my chest backwards and of course straightening my legs.
