If you are living with Long Covid or CFS, you know that “just resting” often doesn’t solve the problem. That’s because your nervous system has become stuck in an emergency response - like a fire alarm that won’t stop ringing even though the fire is out.

This video is about how the brain- body connection works and why retraining your neurological pathways is the key to switching off the alarm.

I’m Sam Judah, and I help people navigate the journey from surviving to thriving using the Lightning Process.

👇Does this “emergency mode” feeling resonate with you? Let’s chat in the comments.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about chronic pain:

People assume it must mean ongoing damage.

So they try everything to fix it: Physio. Surgery. Pain relief. Rest

But what if the issue isn't just the body anymore… but the pattern the brain has learned?

A Norwegian study published in Dagens Medisin described exactly this. Chronic Pain in adolescents - in some cases lasting more than two years - was identified as an expression of neuroplastic changes and central sensitisation in the pain system.

The brain, in other words, had learned to run pain.

Most chronic pain I see follows a loop:
Pain → attention → fear → stress response → more pain

And once that loop is established, it can keep running long after the original trigger has gone.

There's a concept firefighters learn early in training called the Fire Triangle.
Every fire needs three things:

Fuel > Air > Heat
Remove one, and the fire goes out.

Chronic pain works in a surprisingly similar way. There's a Pain Triangle that keeps the system running:

1. Emotions - Fear. Worry. Frustration. Anger.
These amplify the body’s threat response.
2. Sensations - The brain becomes highly trained at scanning for pain.
Filtering for it. Amplifying it.
3. Cognition (the pain story) - “There’s something wrong.” “This isn’t going to change.” “I need a medical intervention.” - These beliefs keep the loop alive.

Most approaches try to fight the fire directly.
Fix the body. Reduce the pain. Push through.

But often, all three sides of the triangle stay intact.

What we do instead is different.
We interrupt the pattern.

We work to gently but deliberately: > Change the emotional response > Retrain attention away from pain signals > Update the internal story about what's happening

In other words - we remove the fuel.

When you take away even one side of the triangle, the system starts to change. Not overnight. But reliably, with the right approach and repetition.

The Norwegian study found that 9 out of 12 adolescents reported significant pain reduction within 12 months using the Lightning Process.

No medication was involved.

The only thing that changed was the pattern.

People going from constant pain and hypervigilance → calm, confidence, and getting their life back.

Not because they forced it. But because they understood the pattern - and learned how to interrupt it.

If you've been told your pain is something to manage rather than something to change, I'd be very happy to have a conversation.

Chronic pain is not a life sentence. It may just be that your system has learned a pattern it hasn't yet been shown how to unlearn.

Most people don’t realise how quickly the brain learns a pattern.

You have one bad experience.

A presentation that goes wrong. You feel anxious, exposed, out of control.

The brain pays attention.

Next time: You remember what happened. Your body reacts as if it’s happening again. You start imagining it going wrong.
Your system ramps up.

By the time you actually stand up to present, you’re already flooded with stress.

And often… it goes badly again.

Not because you can’t present.

But because your system has learned a pattern.

I see the same thing with: chronic fatigue/ pain, anxiety and Long Covid.

It’s not just the condition. It’s the pattern the nervous system has learned to run.

The good news is: what the brain learns, it can also unlearn.

What happens when you present the Lightning Process to a room full of doctors who have never heard of it?

Last week I had the chance to find out.

I was invited to present to 17 doctors and healthcare professionals at Karis Medical Centre in Birmingham, hosted by a GP who completed the Lightning Process with me last year.

Interestingly, most of the clinicians in the room had never come across the Lightning Process before.

In a 30-minute session, we covered:
• What the Lightning Process actually is (and just as importantly, what it isn’t)
• The neuroscience behind the approach
• The research base - 18 peer-reviewed studies, including a recent Long COVID audit (2025) and an NHS randomised controlled trial

One thing I’ve noticed when speaking with clinicians is this:
The first question is rarely “does it work?”

Once people see the research and data, that conversation moves quite quickly.
The more interesting question becomes:
“Who is it actually right for?”

In my experience, it can be particularly relevant for people dealing with:

• ME/CFS
• Long COVID
• Chronic pain
• Anxiety
• Burnout

Especially when people feel stuck and other approaches haven’t helped as much as they hoped.

If you're curious about how this work fits alongside conventional medical care, or know someone who might benefit from learning more, feel free to get in touch. I'm always happy to have a conversation.

I received this message yesterday, and with permission, I'm sharing it: "I've been meaning to write to you for a while with an update, but in honesty have not wanted to jinx myself which I know isn't helpful thinking!

It's now been just under a year since I took the Lightning Process course with you, and I have felt for a long time now that I've really got my full life back.

Last year I had two weddings of my closest friends, even being a bridesmaid out in Mallorca, and had the most amazing time at both dancing way into the night with full confidence in my health. Just this week I have booked to go away to Costa Rica for 10 days in the Spring which I am so excited for.

In my day to day life I feel I'm really back in the driving seat in my career, in the office most days, and I'm progressing the way I want. I've spent some great quality time with family, and my social life is full again even with concerts and nights out!

I am forever grateful for my experience with you on this course - I honestly still can't quite believe the effect it has had and neither can most people in my life. It has given me such confidence that no matter what may happen in the future with my health I have so many tools to deal with it."

If you have chronic pain that doesn't match the severity of your injury – you're not imagining it.

New research in The Lancet explains why: central sensitisation.
Your nervous system has become amplified – sending pain signals even when there's minimal tissue damage. It's like a faulty car alarm that goes off when someone walks past, not just when there's an actual break-in.

This happens in fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic back pain, headaches, and many other conditions.

Here's what matters:
The research shows that central sensitisation predicts poor treatment outcomes with conventional approaches. If your nervous system is stuck in this amplified state, treating the injury site alone won't work.

But the evidence also shows that retraining your nervous system does work – using specific pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches.

This is exactly what I see in practice. People who've tried everything – physio, painkillers, rest, exercise – with minimal improvement. Because nobody addressed the central sensitisation.

The Lightning Process specifically targets this neural amplification. It's not about "managing" pain or accepting a new normal. It's about retraining the system that's generating the pain signal.

If you've been told "it's all in your head" or "you'll just have to live with it" – the science says otherwise. Your pain is real. The system generating it can be retrained.

The Heavy Rucksack of Leadership

I was recently working with a business leader recovering from long Covid. As we discussed his phased return to work, something became clear: he was carrying an invisible weight.

In his mind, being a "good leader" meant:
Always being inspirational
Never showing struggle
Being the "nice guy" who had it all together

The result? Exhaustion. A constant sense of falling short.

When I asked what would happen if he just showed up as himself, he looked at me like I'd suggested showing up naked.
"That wouldn't be enough," he said.

But here's what we discovered:

When he reconnected with three things, everything shifted:

1. His vision for the company
Not the polished version for investors, the real one. The thing that made him start this in the first place.
2. His sense of purpose
His deep "why." The reason this work matters to him beyond metrics and meetings.
3. His values
What he actually stands for when the performance drops away. Integrity. Honesty. Showing up as he is.

With these three anchors, he didn't need to perform. He could lead from a place of calm, authenticity, and genuine connection.

The rucksack got lighter.

If you're running on empty, dealing with burnout, perfectionism, ADHD, or just the relentless pressure to be "enough" -you might be carrying a similar weight.

Leadership (and life) doesn't require you to be inspirational every day.

It requires you to be real.

And that starts with knowing:
What you're building toward
Why it matters to you
Who you actually are underneath the performance

The rest takes care of itself.

I work with people navigating burnout and chronic illness recovery. DM to find out more.

I received this message from a doctor who did the Lightning Process for burnout.

They wrote:
"I have never before experienced something which resonates so deeply with my values and sense of being human whilst being immensely practical and simple.

The synthesis of neurophysiology, wisdom teaching, kindness and compassion with techniques for grappling with choice and change have been invaluable.

Thanks for encouraging us to put trust in ourselves and learn to love living as who we really are."

This is from someone who spent years studying the human body and mind. Someone who understands the science deeply.

And what struck them wasn't just the neuroscience - it was how practical it is. How it actually works in real life.

Here's what I think they're getting at:
Most approaches to burnout, chronic stress, or illness are either purely scientific (treat the symptoms, manage the condition) or purely philosophical (positive thinking, mindfulness).

The Lightning Process bridges both.
It's grounded in neuroplasticity and nervous system science. But it's also deeply human - it recognizes that we're not just biological machines, we're people trying to live meaningful lives.
When you retrain your nervous system, you're not just reducing symptoms. You're reconnecting with who you actually are underneath the stress, pain, or exhaustion.

That's the transformation that people describe as "life-changing."

If you're a high-achiever dealing with burnout, chronic stress, or illness - and the usual approaches haven't worked - this might be why.

DM me if this resonates and you'd like to know more.

Pain that won't go away - even though the injury healed months ago?
That's not because something's still damaged.
It's because your nervous system hasn't gotten the message that you're safe.
Chronic pain often starts with an injury, illness, or trauma. Your body creates pain as a protective response - completely normal and necessary.
But sometimes, even after the tissue heals, the pain stays.
Here's why: your nervous system has learned a pain pattern. It's still sending alarm signals as if the threat is ongoing - even when it's not.
The scans come back clear. Doctors say structurally you're fine. But the pain is very real.
That's because pain isn't just about tissue damage - it's about your brain's perception of threat.
When your nervous system is stuck in protection mode, it keeps creating pain to keep you safe from a danger that no longer exists.
The problem isn't your body. It's the pattern.
And patterns can be retrained.
I've worked with countless people who've lived with chronic pain for years - and watched them recover once they learned to retrain their nervous system response.
If you've tried everything and the pain won't shift, this might be why.
Follow along for more insights on retraining the brain-mind-body connection.

Your doctor missed something.
And it's not their fault.

The tests came back normal. Blood work looks fine. Scans show nothing. You're told it's stress, or anxiety, or "just something you have to live with."

But here's what those tests can't see:

Your nervous system is stuck in protection mode.

Let me explain:
When you experience illness, injury, trauma, or chronic stress, your nervous system learns to stay on high alert. It's trying to protect you.
The problem? Sometimes it forgets to turn off.

So even when the original threat is gone, your brain - body connection keeps triggering pain, fatigue, or immune responses as if you're still in danger.

The tests are normal because there's nothing structurally wrong.
But functionally? Your nervous system is running a pattern it learned - and can't seem to unlearn.

This is why rest doesn't fix it. Why medication only masks symptoms. Why you've tried everything and nothing sticks.

You don't need to fix what's broken.
You need to retrain what's stuck.

That's exactly what I do through the Lightning Process - help people retrain their nervous system response so their body can finally heal.
If you've been told "there's nothing wrong" but you KNOW something isn't right - this might be why.

Your body hasn't failed you. It just needs a different approach.

Last month I worked with someone I'll call David.
His wife had done the Lightning Process with me last year to recover from Long Covid. She got such good results (she can now fly with zero anxiety - something that used to paralyse her) that she suggested David try it for his chronic stress.
David's situation will sound familiar to many of you:
Constant stress from work, family life, teenage kids. Reacting to everything. Anger, perfectionism, guilt on repeat. Lots of blame - at himself, at others, at situations he felt he should control but couldn't.
He'd done years of talking therapy. It helped him understand WHY he felt this way, but nothing changed. He was still stuck in the same patterns.
Here's what he said in his application: "I want to see stressful situations for what they are rather than dramas I feel I should have control over. I want to be more at peace with myself."
David described his changes as "astronomical."
What shifted wasn't the situations - his job is still demanding, his kids are still teenagers, life is still life.
What shifted was his response.
He went from "Why is this happening to me?" (passive, victim, stuck) to recognising the pattern as just a habit his brain had learned over years.
And once he saw it clearly, he could choose differently.
Instead of reacting from anger and stress, he started responding with calm and clarity. He got out of his head and became more present. He tuned into his own intuition instead of being ruled by old patterns.
If you're stuck in chronic stress, blame, or reactivity - and talking about it hasn't changed it - this is why.
Understanding the problem is not the same as retraining your brain and nervous system's response.
Your stress isn't "just who you are." It's a pattern. And patterns can change.
