In today’s “Get to Know Mr Bast”, we asked a few more personal questions to share a glimpse of life beyond the operating theatre.

We asked him:
• How he unwinds after a long day in theatre
• Something people may be surprised to learn about him
• What career he might have chosen if he weren’t a surgeon
• And the best piece of advice he has received in his medical career

His reflections offer a thoughtful look at the balance between surgical precision, personal passions, and the values that guide his approach to patient care.

A question many patients quietly wonder: “Can you pick your nose after rhinoplasty?”

The answer is yes, once healing is complete, you can care for your nose just as you did before surgery.

During the healing phase, the inside of the nose can feel drier and more crusted than usual. To avoid disturbing the surgical site, Mr Bast advises using ointments and saline douches to keep the area soft, clean, and comfortable.

These measures help protect the delicate tissues as they heal and reduce the risk of irritation or injury.

Once recovery is complete, normal nasal care can resume.

Many patients ask whether a nose job (rhinoplasty) can “fix” migraines.

The honest answer is: not usually, but in some cases, nose and sinus surgery can help certain headache symptoms.

Migraines are typically a neurological condition, often triggered by factors such as hormones, stress, sleep, light, or specific foods. A standard cosmetic rhinoplasty alone is not a treatment for migraine.

However, some people experience facial pain and “sinus-type” headaches due to structural issues inside the nose – for example:
Severe septal deviation

Contact points inside the nose

Chronic inflammation affecting the nasal passages or sinuses

In carefully selected cases, functional nasal or sinus surgery (such as septoplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery) may reduce these symptoms by improving airflow and drainage. This is very different from treating true migraine, and it requires a thorough assessment.

During a consultation, Mr Florian Bast evaluates whether symptoms are likely to be related to the nose and sinuses, or whether they may be more consistent with migraine or tension-type headaches, which often need a different medical approach.

A personalised assessment is essential, and any decision about surgery should be based on clear structural findings, not just the hope of “curing” headaches.

Choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon who is also an ENT specialist provides important advantages for both the functional and aesthetic success of your surgery.

Rhinoplasty is not only about appearance, the nose is a breathing organ with complex internal structures. An ENT-trained surgeon understands the nasal septum, turbinates, valves, and sinus pathways in detail, ensuring that aesthetic refinements never compromise airflow or long-term comfort.

With dual training in functional nasal surgery and facial aesthetics, Mr Bast approaches every case with a complete understanding of how structure, support, and balance work together. This means patients receive a result that not only looks natural and harmonious, but also maintains or improves breathing.

For many patients, this combination of expertise provides reassurance that both form and function are prioritised from the first consultation to long-term follow-up.

Many patients ask whether nose tape or mouth tape can improve nasal breathing.

The short answer: they can help in some situations, but they cannot correct structural problems.

Nose tape may slightly widen the nasal passage at the surface, but this effect is temporary and limited to the skin and soft tissue. It cannot address deeper issues such as a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse, or internal narrowing.

If the airway is blocked structurally, tape will not create meaningful or lasting improvement.

Mouth tape is sometimes used to encourage nasal breathing during sleep, but it only works if the nose is already able to function properly. If airflow is restricted, taping the mouth may make symptoms feel worse, not better.

During a consultation, Mr Bast assesses whether breathing difficulties are caused by:
• structural problems
• soft-tissue or skin-related factors
• inflammation or congestion
• or a combination of these

Once the cause is identified, a tailored plan can be made, ranging from medical treatment to functional rhinoplasty when necessary.

Nasal breathing is essential for healthy sleep, exercise, and overall wellbeing. The key to meaningful improvement is understanding the cause, not relying on temporary fixes.

Year in Review 2025

As the year draws to a close, it offers an opportunity to reflect on some of the most meaningful moments in Mr Florian Bast’s practice, from international charity work to clinic growth and recognition for exceptional surgical results.

It has been a year marked by progress, collaboration, and the privilege of supporting patients through life-changing functional and aesthetic treatment.

🏆 Aesthetic Awards Win- Best Surgical Result 2025
One of the standout highlights was Mr Bast receiving the award for Best Surgical Result 2025 at the Aesthetic Awards, a recognition of his commitment to precision, natural outcomes, and patient-focused care. This achievement is a testament to the trust patients place in him and the dedication of the wider team.

🌏 Vietnam Facing the World Surgical Mission
This year, Mr Bast also returned to Vietnam as part of his work with Facing the World, a global health charity that has transformed care for children with severe craniofacial differences for almost 20 years.

Working with major hospitals including Viet Duc University Hospital, 108 Military Hospital and Hong Ngoc Hospital, the charity has helped grow craniofacial teams from just five surgeons to more than fifty, enabling over 10,000 life-changing surgeries every year.

Through the charity’s “Train the Trainers” model, more than 187 international fellowships have already been completed, with a further 200 planned. Over £2.5 million of advanced equipment has been donated, and Southeast Asia’s first Craniofacial Centre of Excellence has been established, accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons.

🏥 New Clinic Locations
This year also marked the beginning of Mr Bast’s work at new clinic locations, including LIPS and Montrose, expanding access to specialist rhinology, aesthetics and facial plastic surgery for patients across London.

✨ Patient Care and Transformative Results
Above all, the most rewarding part of the year has been the privilege of caring for patients, from complex revision rhinoplasty cases to functional nasal surgery and ongoing aftercare. Their experiences, trust, and feedback continue to shape every aspect of Mr Bast’s approach.

Thank you to all patients, colleagues, and partners for a remarkable year.

Mr Bast looks forward to continuing to provide expert, compassionate care in 2026.
