The Benefits of Waiting by Sara Wickham and Nadine Edwards
The need to prove safety can be problematic, because the very ideology that underpins scientific research makes safety very difficult to prove. But in one area of maternity care that has received a lot of attention over the past few years, an increasing volume of research is demonstrating that it is both safe and beneficial to wait. We are referring to the question of optimal cord clamping: being patient before rushing to cut the baby’s umbilical cord, unless there is a problem which necessitates a speedier approach.

Babies Come Out.

In MOST cases it is not the inability of the women's body to deliver, rather its the lack of training and comfortability and patience of the doctor.

DOULA LOVE 💛

I am deeply grateful for the trust and privilege of being invited into each family's birth journey, and for the opportunity to make a positive difference in their lives.

Each birth is a powerful and unique experience, and being present in these sacred moments is a profound honour ✨

Today is WORLD DOULA DAY which also marks the start of World Doula Week. And this year theme is Doulas Leading with Heart 💛

So it only feels right to tell you all about WHY I do what I do.

My children’s births were the catalyst for my work in the birth world. As I navigated my own transition from maiden to mother, I had the most wonderful and calm doula present for the home birth of my second baby. I felt held, safe, and truly cared for - and that experience inspired me to offer the same to others.

Being a doula means offering more than just physical support. It’s about providing emotional presence, listening deeply, and honoring each family’s unique needs. I believe this approach is essential in creating a space where families feel truly seen and supported by doulas who bring their authentic selves to every interaction. I prioritize compassion, empathy, and unwavering care for every family I serve.

What I love most about this work is walking alongside women and families as they transition into parenthood - watching them grow in confidence, lean into their intuition, and step through the portal of welcoming their baby earthside. It’s a profound privilege and an honour to be part of this journey, and I feel excited and deeply grateful every time a family invites me onto their birth team.

Doula Penny Simkin discusses the positive impact that doulas have on birth outcomes. They provide a unique form of labor support that is different from that of other caregivers involved in the birth process--but complements the roles of others. Simkins describes why this is so.
