This Glastonbury, Lewis Capaldi’s performance was remarkable with a capital R.✨
And not just because he’s a remarkable musician, but because the love and support from the crowd in response to a visibly struggling Capaldi was absolutely remarkable.
This clip is an incredibly affecting representation of disability (the singer/songwriter recently shared his experience with anxiety and Tourettes in the documentary, How I’m Feeling Now) existing amongst success, joy, and talent without it being distorted into a ‘secret superpower’, or into a tragic storyline.
The crowd bolstered Capaldi, appreciated and celebrated him and his performance without any tokenism, frustration, or mockery - a far cry from the treatment of celebrities who have publicly experienced mental health issues in the past, such as Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears.
Is this progress in terms of how we treat disability and mental ill-health? Or was this just a moment in time? We hope it’s the former. 💛
