Advances in stem cells, exosomes, biomaterials, and RNA technologies are expanding therapeutic options beyond traditional wound-based remodelling.

Conventional energy-based and chemical resurfacing approaches produce a controlled scar via inflammatory remodelling, whereas regenerative strategies aim to normalise architecture and function by modulating fibroblast plasticity and extracellular matrix composition.

Regenerative pillars encompass stem/progenitor-cell platforms, scaffold-guided tissue engineering, soluble biologics, exosome-mediated signalling, and RNA-based gene-expression modulation without genomic alteration.

Rosacea Awareness month

The 1 in 20 Americans who suffer from rosacea have more treatment options than ever before — but most patients don't take advantage of the full range of ever-increasing therapy options, experts say. The National Rosacea Society (NRS) has designated April as Rosacea Awareness Month to educate the public about this chronic facial skin disorder and encourage those who suspect they may have it to see a dermatologist for diagnosis, effective treatment and guidance on gentle skin care.

As demand for injectables continues to surge, a troubling underground trend is gaining traction. The latest TikTok trend dubbed “backyard Botox” shows users “mapping out their faces, loading syringes, and injecting what they claim are Botox or Botox-like neurotoxins”—often labelling the process as beginner-friendly or pitching it as a money-saving aesthetic hack.

What the at-home trend actually delivers, experts say, is a serious risk to both appearance and health. When neuromodulators are administered improperly, the consequences can range from disappointing to dangerous.

Proper consultations, sterile technique, precise dosing, and a deep understanding of facial anatomy are not optional steps—they are essential measures designed to protect patient safety and outcomes. “Backyard Botox is a recipe for a number of potential issues: infection, foreign body reactions, true botulism, and muscle paralysis and asymmetry,” Lal said.

Psoriasis can range from a minor irritation to a debilitating condition. There are three main types. Plaque psoriasis is the most common, causing lesions on the skin that appear flaky, red, and scaly, typically on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. Pustular psoriasis often occurs on the palms, fingers and the soles of the feet. It causes pus-filled blisters. Erythrodermic psoriasis can affect any part of the body and causes the skin to intensely itch and burn. It is very uncomfortable.

Many people find the unpredictability of psoriasis very frustrating as it can appear and then completely disappear unexpectedly. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks skin cells. In some cases, it is possible to identify specific triggers for psoriasis. Stress can often be the cause, although some medications can also cause flare-ups.

Spring is here, and now is the ideal time to refine your skincare routine for the warmer months. As the temperature and humidity rises there will be less need for thick creams and protective balms. We recommend swapping out your heavy winter creams for lightweight moisturisers. Incorporate the use of a gentle exfoliant, which will clear your pores and keep your skin fresh. It is also a good time to introduce a toner after cleansing. Serums are also an important part of your skincare routine, and a good vitamin C serum under your moisturiser.

Now it's the time to reintroduce a separate sunscreen of SPF 50, to protect your skin from springtime rays. The seasons are changing, make sure to change with them, and keep your skin healthy and glowing.

If you are seeking specialised advice and treatment solutions, make an appointment with one of our expert dermatologists for tailored recommendations.

Menopause is increasingly recognised as a major health transition, yet its profound effects on skin quality remain under-discussed in both public discourse and clinical care. At Merz Aesthetics’ recent IMCAS symposium, “Ahead of the Curve,” Bianca Viscomi, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Bianca Viscomi Clínica Dermatológica in São Paulo, Brazil, and a Merz Aesthetics Global Speaker, spotlighted menopause as a pivotal, hormone-driven inflection point for skin biology.

In this Q&A with Dermatology Times, Viscomi examines why menopausal skin changes are often overlooked, how rapid collagen loss and structural decline affect patients’ psychological well-being, and which evidence-based, multimodal strategies can help clinicians better address skin quality during this life stage.

Innovations in the Acne Treatment Pipeline

The future of acne treatment could see innovative approaches, according to Hilary Baldwin, MD. As research pinpoints the role of inflammation in acne pathophysiology, there are increased opportunities for treatment modalities and mechanisms of action, she told Dermatology Times.

Baldwin believes that research and the pipeline hold promise for clinicians and their patients with acne, and she remains hopeful for adding to the options available to them. “I think the future is bright for [acne], and I am looking forward to what they come up with next.”

Multi-Ingredient Topical Treatment Significantly Improves Wrinkles and Skin Thickness in Patients with "Ozempic Face"

Rapid weight loss associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists, dual GLP-1/GIP agonists, bariatric surgery, or intensive behavioral interventions is increasingly linked to accelerated facial aging, Dermatologists and aesthetic clinicians are treating more cases of loss of subcutaneous fat, reduced dermal support, laxity, and increased wrinkle prominence in clinic, currently being termed “Ozempic Face”.1 A new prospective study evaluated whether a multi-ingredient topical volumising cream could improve facial volume appearance and skin biophysical parameters in adult patients experiencing these skin changes.

Inventing Modern Microneedling and Defining the Future of Skin Regeneration

Nearly 3 decades ago, Des Fernandes, MBBCh, FRCS (Edin), a plastic surgeon, researcher, and founder of Environ Skin Care, transformed a niche concept into one of today’s most widely adopted modalities for scar revision, photoaging, and skin regeneration. His pioneering work helped codify microneedling as a predictable, minimally invasive, collagen-inducing therapy long before the aesthetic market recognised its potential. In an exclusive, in-depth conversation with Dermatology Times, Fernandes reflects on how the technique evolved, the essential role of topical vitamins, and the next era of regeneration-focused aesthetic dermatology.

Fernandes predicts a continued rise in the global adoption of microneedling, not as a budget alternative to energy-based devices but as a primary regenerative therapy with unmatched safety and versatility.

“We are forever evolving as the science of skin care grows, and we are working on some new ideas that we believe will be pioneering changes in skin care.”
