Julia Finlay Osteopath

Julia Finlay Osteopath My aim is to help you, your baby or child back to health as easily as possible. I help with overall health and get to the cause of the problem

I am concerned with overall health and the cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. I have specialist experience and qualifications in treatment of babies, children (including special needs and developmental delay) and pregnant and post -natal mothers. Cranial osteopathy addresses dysfunction in the body by using gentle touch to prompt and support change. It works with anatomy, as all osteopathy does, and aims to support the body's natural healing mechanisms to restore health. My experience is that patients often report improvements in symptoms beyond those they mention when they first come for treatment. If you are not sure if your complaint is suitable for osteopathic treatment please get in touch and I will be happy to discuss it with you.

What’s your reaction to this?

Research shows that Finnish children start school at the age of 7, yet they consistently outperform their peers worldwide in literacy, mathematics, and overall well-being.

But here’s what’s striking:
They don’t get ahead by rushing.
They thrive because they aren’t rushed.

Because here’s the truth: in Finland, childhood is still sacred. The early years aren’t filled with flashcards, early readers, and pressure to perform. They’re filled with forest walks, open-ended play, and long, unhurried moments of discovery.

🧠 Decades of research (Sahlberg, 2015; Whitebread, 2012; OECD, 2018) reveal that this slower start protects a child’s developing brain. Early play isn’t wasted time; it’s wiring time. When children build forts, climb trees, and explore mud puddles, they’re also building executive function, problem-solving, and emotional regulation, the very skills that predict lifelong success.

In Finland, teachers don’t “teach to the test.” They teach the child. Recess isn’t a reward. It’s a right. And homework in the early years? Almost none. Because rest and family connection are also seen as part of education.

Why does this matter?
Because too many children today are burning out before they even learn who they are. We push academics before self-awareness, competition over curiosity. We teach them to chase achievement before they’ve learned to love learning.

However, the Finnish model reminds us that a child who plays deeply learns deeply.
A child who feels safe will explore bravely.
And a child allowed to grow at their own pace will often surpass those who were hurried.

So maybe the question isn’t,
“How can we help our kids get ahead?”
Maybe it’s,
“How can we protect their joy long enough for learning to bloom naturally?”

Because childhood isn’t a waiting room for “real life.” It is real life… the most formative, fertile soil for everything that comes next. 🤍

Back at work next week with some new initials under my belt- very thrilled indeed to have completed the SCCOs paediatric diploma and to have been given fellowship of the college as part of this. That was 6 weekends of tutoring and lecture prep over 2 years. A great crowd of students very skilfully led by very experienced faculty. Well worth it! 🥳

Interesting short piece on our 3 “brains” and how they intercommunicate 🙂

Before we wrap up our theme for this month of 'Our Three Brains', we wanted to share with you this informative article by therapist and writer Daren Knight (Dún Danu Amatsu Clinic).

Have you ever felt an innate knowing from “using your head”, “following your heart”, or “having a gut feeling about something”? Where does this intelligence of knowing come from?

Daren explores the three connected brains of human nature (the head, the heart and the gut) and explains how all three share similarities, in that they are able to independently process, store and access information when needed, as well as how they work in connection.
