What groups does our Perinatal Mental Health Service offer?

Motherhood can be beautiful, but also incredibly hard. Our Perinatal service offers three brilliant group programmes designed to support you during this important time:

🌈 Circle of Security – Parenting (COS-P)
An 8-week, face-to-face programme to help you better understand your child’s emotional needs and your own responses. This group will help strengthen the parent-child bond and build your child’s emotional resilience and self-esteem.

💗 Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Group
If you’re struggling with self-criticism or shame around motherhood, this group will help gently build self-compassion and emotional safety. CFT also supports bonding with your baby by activating your soothing system (hello, oxytocin!) and teaching the same compassionate skills that help form strong, secure attachments.

🧠 Trauma Stabilisation Group
If past trauma is resurfacing in pregnancy or early motherhood, you’re not alone. This group offers a safe space to understand how trauma affects you and will provide you with the tools to manage anxiety, feel more in control, and strengthen your connection with your baby. These sessions help women feel more empowered, less alone, and better equipped for the challenges of motherhood!

These groups are designed for women in the perinatal period (pregnancy to one year after birth) and are facilitated by experienced professionals in a warm, non-judgmental environment.

As part of South Asian Heritage Month, we spoke to Michele, Divisional Head of Administration in the Specialist Division, and Co-Chair of our REACH Network.

This year’s theme is "Roots to Routes", inviting us to reflect on how our heritage shapes our journeys, both personally and professionally. Michele reflects on how her Indian heritage and family values shaped her path in the NHS over the past 20 years.

“It’s only since getting older I understand the importance of my roots. My heritage has given me the ability to speak in different languages, the ability to appreciate the spices in our cooking... and most importantly, my love for Bollywood film and music.”

“I have worked hard to get recognised and at times it has been difficult. But I take pride in the work I do. In the past couple of years, it’s been good to see South Asians in the Trust at a senior level — that inspires me to achieve more.”

"This mural is more than art"

Last week we unveiled a powerful mural created by a group of women in recovery from addiction at Caledonian Park.

Over six months, the group came together weekly through Better Lives, our Islington drug and alcohol service, to paint the mural.

Jane Palmer, one of our managers at Better Lives Islington, said: "Even when life got difficult, and it did at times, they continued to show up, support each other and stay committed. That level of consistency and resilience is nothing short of incredible.”

She added: “The mural is more than just art. It’s a message, a story, a celebration of what recovery can look like when women are given space, support and the chance to express themselves.”

👉 Go see it in Caledonian Park (just off Market Road)!

And stay tuned — the journey of the women involved in the mural is also becoming a short film by Sobriety Films , premiering at the Recovery Street Film Festival in Islington this September!

Myth busting Monday!

Our perinatal team are back with their medication myth-busting!

Did you know many women can continue taking their medication, including antidepressants, during pregnancy and breastfeeding?💊🤱

Medication may need to be reviewed and doses tweaked during this period, due to changes in your body. You shouldn't stop taking any medication without speaking to your GP or healthcare professional.

It's essential to have informed conversations with your healthcare team to support your choices.

Our Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service offer pre-conception counselling, in addition to supporting women and birthing people struggling with their mental health during pregnancy or the post-partum period. If you think you require support, visit our website and self-refer today.

Did you know that mental health challenges during the perinatal period can affect both parents? If your partner is experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety, it can also impact your own emotional wellbeing.

💡 Supporting your partner can make a big difference in their recovery, but it’s just as important to seek support for yourself.
