🌿 Struggling with Early Allergies? It Might Be Alder Tree Pollen! 🤧

This time of year, can mean more than just cold weather-it could also signal the start of tree pollen season. If you’re noticing classic hay fever symptoms like sneezing, congestion, or chest tightness early in the year, it may not just be a cold. In fact, it could be due to alder tree pollen, which often starts to pollinate in January, especially if we’ve had a milder December.

Did you know that 1 in 4 adults and nearly 1 in 3 children suffer from allergic rhinitis? This means a large portion of the population is prone to tree pollen-induced allergies, often accompanied by allergic asthma.

💡 Alder Pollen Alert: If you're experiencing hay fever symptoms this time of year, especially year after year, it could be linked to an alder tree allergy. And it doesn’t stop there-alder pollen can cross-react with other tree pollens, such as birch and hazel, meaning if you're allergic to one, you may react to others as well.

At London Nose and Sinus Clinic Medical we recommend:

✅If you’re struggling with tree pollen-induced hay fever, see an allergist to confirm if alder pollen is the culprit.

✅For those who already know their triggers, starting an intranasal steroid spray in early January can help prevent symptoms before they escalate in February, when alder pollen levels peak.

✅Many of our patients who’ve undergone tree pollen immunotherapy by Christmas time are already on their way to a smoother spring, with fewer symptoms and better asthma control.

👩‍⚕️ Key Insight: If you experience bothersome nose and eye symptoms due to tree pollen allergies, make an appointment with an allergist. Together, you can pinpoint what trees are causing your discomfort and plan ahead for the best treatment options. If treatments aren’t working as hoped in Spring 2026, immunotherapy might be a good option for you starting in October 2026, giving you 8–12 weeks to build up pollen tolerance before the 2027 season arrives.

Christmas is a time for celebration, indulgent food, and gathering with loved ones - but for the 6% of UK adults and 7.1% of children living with food allergies, the festive season can bring added risk and anxiety.

Many traditional Christmas favourites contain hidden allergens, including:

🥜 Nuts (stuffing, mince pies, chocolates, nut roasts)
🥚 Eggs (cakes, pastries, sauces, eggnog)
🥛 Dairy (butter, cream, cheese, chocolate, mash)
🌾 Gluten (stuffing, gravy, pastries, bread sauce)
🦐 Fish & shellfish
🌱 Soy (gravy mixes, processed foods, plant-based alternatives)
🥜 Peanuts (desserts, chocolates, Asian-inspired dishes)
🍊 Fruit allergens (mulled wine, cakes, mince pies)

🤧 House dust mite allergy and colds in wintertime.

If you notice blocked nose, sneezing, sinus pressure, tiredness or even worsening asthma outside the summer months, the culprit could be house dust mite allergy.

As we close our windows and turn up the heating, dust mite allergens rise sharply indoors. These allergens don’t just trigger typical hay fever symptoms - they can also:

🔸 Cause a chronic “head-cold” feeling
🔸 Lead to repeated, long-lasting colds
🔸 Weaken the nose’s antiviral defences
🔸 Increase the risk of viral and bacterial sinus infections
🔸 Aggravate asthma

This can create a vicious cycle of recurrent colds and worsening allergy.

What can you do?

✔️ Get allergy testing to confirm dust mite sensitisation
✔️ Reduce dust mite exposure at home (see excellent guidance from Allergy UK)
✔️ Speak to your GP about referral to an allergy specialist
✔️ Consider medical treatment, including safe and effective dust mite immunotherapy
