Beautiful Cycles of Connection for Mums last night ❤️❤️❤️

I took these pictures waiting for the six lovely mamas to arrive.

At the end of the sharing and teachings, what amazing feeling it was hearing they were leaving 'inspired', 'excited' and 'warm' about connecting with their daughters and celebrating menarche.

YESSSSSS! That's exactly why I'm in love with this work.

What if PMS wasn’t a syndrome, a suffering, or problem that needs fixing?

What if it wasn’t something you need to eradicate, medicate or ameliorate?

What if…

It was a Power Awakening
A strength we learned to wield
A vital truth-telling
Lie-Detecting
All-seeing eye
Which has society’s respect
And which we don’t feel consumed by
Because we don’t try to hide.

But rather we hold it
in all its bright, beautiful
Healthy tension
Necessary for the world’s growth
And rather we listen to it
This original instruction
To draw a line of our boundaries,
To make space around the sacred,
To compassionately
Fiercely
Firmly

🌖🌗🌘Women are like the Moon; a little bit different everyday🌒🌓🌔

It’s a very special moment at the Girlwise First-Period Experience when girls understand that everything in our lives comes as a cycle, and that we can embrace and nourish every stage.

Using the moon as a metaphor for our experience as menstrual beings is a wonderful way to introduce the idea that our cycles are not just about the presence or absence of blood, but about a whole month of changing energies and needs.

And - my favourite ‘a-ha’ moment - ✨that the end of one cycle is also the beginning of the next.✨

Here’s some of the reasons parents give for not talking to their children about menstrual cycles:

🩸Feeling embarrassed or not knowing what to say.

(Answer: Totally understandable! We’ve grown up in a culture that has made Menstrual Cycles invisible and taboo.)

🩸Relying on school education

(Answer: Schools, bless ‘em, can only offer the basics, and on their own timescale. Her easeful experience starts with YOU)

🩸Think their child is ‘too young’ or ‘too innocent’

(Answer: I hear that fear, but let’s not confuse Menstrual Cycle education with S*x Education - it’s not the same thing.)

♥️Cycles of Connection♥️ is a workshop for mums to prepare for their child’s first period in a compassionate, informative and supportive circle with others.

I’m so enjoying working with local Makers for my upcoming circles!

I’m constantly blown away by the level of skill and artistry I see in creative women. 🤩

This fabulous Artist is currently sewing down the motifs on a quilted centre-piece that will welcome girls into the space when they arrive.

And I can feel that she’s sewing love for its purpose with every stitch. ✨

It feels awesome for my vision that’s been brewing so long to be woven into reality with the help of women with jaw-dropping artistic talent.

This is what my friend Vic does in public toilets.

Everyday language is so powerful and influences the way we feel about our body from the moment we learn words.

In my Cycles of Connection workshop for mums, a focus is POSITIVE MESSAGING for menstrual cycles - and how to create it easily in your home.

We can start by using accurate language for menstrual products instead of BS euphemisms that stigmatise the female body.

And yes, these words are so ingrained, that even businesses who want to show support for menstruators are using them.

So if you have a daughter, make this small but massive change in the way you describe the products that support her …. MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS.

I was definitely an adult before I understood the difference.

And, whilst I’m sure I was taught it in a dim and distant biology lesson, and probably had a ‘body’ book at home, vaginas and v***as just didn’t get the ubiquitous societal coverage that male genitalia gets.

And I think it’s crazy and needs changing, that our culture keeps our own bodies hidden from us.

So, with my own daughter I don’t pass up any opportunity to point out when something looks like a v***a – a shapely leaf, some beautiful architecture, shells at the beach; we’ve actually even made v***a-shaped biscuits.

I love to tell her that v***as were graffitied on ancient stone by our forbears as a symbol of strength to ward-off evil, and the labia-resembling oyster shells that were hung in doorways as a sign of prosperity, in all their irregular and curvaceous beauty. I want it to be warp-and-weft of her body-knowledge, just like knowing an arm or a leg.

And I ADORE these glorious v***a-pillows, hand-crocheted by lovely local-maker for my upcoming 🌻Girlwise First-Period Experience 🌻created especially for 9-12 year old girls (I keep finding them in my daughter’s room nestled among the plushies)

⚽️GOT A SPORTY GIRL?🥊

The odds are stacked against them continuing in their sport beyond puberty. This statistic makes me sad and furious.

And determined! 🔥

Let me share some of the reasons for this horrible drop out rate, cited by Menstrual Cycle practitioners:

🩸Not knowing how to use menstrual products without discomfort

🩸Not feeling able to talk to sports coaches and teachers about their menstrual cycle

🩸Not being given female-centred sports kit-lists, or advice about the importance of fitted sports bras.

🩸Suffering in silence with unmanageable menstrual challenges.

All of these issues can be addressed with education, support and open loving communication with our girls, their parents and sports teachers.

I’m set-alight by this work!🔥♥️
