I describe Alzheimer’s dementia as a burglar repeatedly returning to rob the mind!
At first, he steals small things;
Names
Keys
Moments
Directions… many brush off as brain fog, ageing or simple forgetfulness. But the burglar keeps returning 😡.
They go out and forget where they are going
Forget how to get home
Put food in the oven, it never turn it on.
And slowly, the theft becomes devastating - because there is no “mind contents insurance” to replace what has been stolen.
The most precious assets of the mind are not money or possessions…
It is the memories of the spouse you loved
The children and grandchildren you carried, raised and nurtured
The life you built
The people you touched
The experiences that shaped you
The person you became
Yet some burglars don’t stop there!!! 😩
They come back for the voice:
The ability to communicate
To express needs
To advocate for yourself
To say “I love you”
To pray
To laugh
To explain pain
To be themselves….
It is cruel - it is heartbreaking and it is devastating to witness.. Losing our mum to this dis-ease was incredibly hard. Yet loving and caring for her over the last four years as it progressed and she was no longer able to walk after a stint in hospital during lockdown 😳, was also a privilege.
She may have forgotten who we were… but we will never forget who she was. Mum lived just six weeks shy of her 90th birthday.
She had had a mastectomy, back in 2011 - one of the many challenges she endured. But she rarely expressed the emotion of them. Did it contribute?
Possibly…
Many of the ‘burglars’ that steal our health do not arrive overnight. They accumulate quietly through lifestyle, stress, emotional suppressions, resentment, exhaustion, unforgiveness and years of simply “pushing through..”
Children leave home - the noise of the house is replaced with a silence that grows louder, especially after losing your spouse too.
And women…. Especially Black women… have mastered the art of smiling through pain, not realising the body stores it. Sometimes sickness, dysfunction and dis-ease are the final whispers of years of ignored notifications from the body.
This weekend at UNFILTERED Soho, in honour of my mum I’ll be speaking about the impact of breast and pelvic health on our overall wellbeing. Let’s begin to take control of our health.
It is such an invaluable resource. My guest speaker will share on thriving through breast cancer and why she started ‘Healing Kitchen..’ You don’t have to have been sick to attend… you just need to want wellness to remain, and be ready to ensure it does…
