The Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture UK (ATCM) is a professional organisation founded in 1994 by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioners in the UK. Dedicated to excellence in the practice of TCM, it promotes proper professional qualifications and the highest standards in the profession. In November 2003, the ATCM merged with British Society of Chinese Medicine (
founded in 2001) and Zhong Shan Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association (founded in 1987) to form a new ATCM with wider representation while maintaining the same high standards. Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the world’s most ancient medical systems. It is a distinct and independent system originating from China more than 2000 years ago and has become increasingly accepted by the population in the UK over the past two decades. A Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner uses Chinese herbal medicine, TCM acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, Qi Gong, and Tui Na (therapeutic massage) or a combination of these therapies. It takes several years of specialised study to understand the theories and the principles of TCM in order to be proficient in the practice TCM. It has been proven to be very effective in the management of many conditions, and has been safely practised for centuries. It is only safe in the hands of qualified practitioners, and could be harmful if administered by inadequately trained persons. It is essential, therefore, that before receiving TCM therapies, one should look for a qualified practitioner. All full members of ATCM hold a university, college or other recognised professional qualification at or above BSc level. They are bound by the Association’s Code of Practice and Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
