Let’s talk thermometers 🌡️

I get asked this a lot: What thermometer is best for babies? 👶

The NHS advise using a digital thermometer for children under 5 and placing it under the armpit whilst holding the arm against the body. An accurate reading can take up to 15 seconds.
Simple, safe, and reliable — exactly what parents need. 🖤

❌ Ear thermometers, although fast, are not recommended as when used incorrectly can give an inaccurate reading.
❌ Forehead thermometers are not recommended either as they take the temperature of the skin rather than the body.

Always contact your GP if your babies temperature is:
* above 38c (3 months or younger)
* above 39c (3-6 months)

Not sure how warm your baby’s bedroom should be in this cold weather? You’re not alone ❤️

The ideal room temperature for a baby or toddler should be around 16−20∘C to avoid overheating, which can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Every baby is different and our advice on the ideal room temperature for babies is intended as a guide only. You will still need to check your baby regularly to see if they are too hot.

To do this, feel your baby’s chest or the back of their neck (your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal). If your baby’s skin is hot or sweaty, remove one or more layers of bedclothes or bedding.

With lots of presents requiring the use of button batteries, it deemed appropriate to raise awareness of the dangers of button batteries.

The problems caused by button batteries are not usually due to chemicals leaking from the battery, but because the battery itself reacts with bodily fluids, such as mucus or saliva.
This creates a release of a strong alkaline that can burn through tissue. Even 'dead' batteries have the potential to release the alkaline so should be treated just the same.

If you suspect your child has swallowed a button battery, call 999 / take them to your nearest A&E department as quickly as possible.

⚠️Do not try to make them sick as this could cause damage as the battery is vomited back up as well as the damage it caused when swallowed.

⚠️If you are unsure if your child has swallowed a button battery please always take them to hospital to be checked

Please, please, please share this and help raise awareness.

Do you use a baby sleep pillow? Or perhaps you know someone who does?

Please STOP ✋

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued a Safety Alert today warning parents and carers to stop using these products for babies under one.

These soft pillows and cushions are often marketed for baby sleep or for a baby to be placed unsupervised. But doing so can cause suffocation or overheating, which can lead to serious injury in babies, including death.

Despite what some online product listings suggest, pillows are not recommended for babies until they are at least 12 months old.

The safest place for your baby to sleep is on a clear, firm, flat surface.

Burns caused by Hot Drinks ☕️ are the most common burn injury for children, however, only 1 in 4 children recieve the correct first aid.

Good first aid following a burn can make an enormous difference in recovery times and the severity of scarring. Remember COOL, CALL, COVER.

* Cool the burn with cool running tap water for 20 minutes. DO NOT remove any clothing stuck to the burn
* Call for help 999, 111 or local GP for advice
* Cover with cling film or a sterile, non-fluffy dressing or cloth.
