It’s a watershed day when you get your first paper published that will form part of your PhD!

And honestly, it’s just the start of the work I am deeply passionate about within the trauma and violence informed physical activity + mental health space - particularly for victim-survivors of gendered violence.

And our systematic review highlighted a number of key considerations for the future development of holistic trauma and violence informed physical activity interventions that support women victim-survivors of gender-based violence - check out our funky little infographic for the ‘headlines’ or head over to the full article if you want to read our full review ⬇️

💜🧡 International Women’s Day 2025 🧡💜

THIS.

Because we need to accelerate action.

💜We need to end violence against women and girls.
🧡 We need to support victim-survivors with evidence-based, accessible and effective approaches to healing and recovery.
💜 We need men to be part of the solution.
🧡 We need equity, access, our voices to be heard.
💜 We need laws and the legal system to change around sexual assault cases, recognition of the impact of coercive control in abusive relationships.
🧡 We need to remember that not all violence is abusive. It’s emotional, psychological, financial and systemic.

There’s a lot to do. We need to and work together to change the things we can not accept.

✴ ✴ What is safety? - new blog post ✴ ✴
[ blog link in bio 🔝 or head over to our website 🌐]

One of the fascinating things about the research I'm doing as part of my PhD (and there are MANY) is having the opportunity to speak to women about what safety means / looks / feels like for them.

This matters because how can we create safety - either internally or within a particular setting - if we don't know that?

So this week I'm exploring the different factors that might influence safety and how we might be able to increase our own experience of safety.

✴ I am always a bit problematic over the summer break because I get time to refine my 'healthy habits' - new blog post ✴ ✴

And this summer - despite the super consistent sunshine and heat that we've had - I've been OBSESSED with hot yoga. I know, a ridiculous time of year to find myself glued to a yoga mat in a super warm room, but it's been fascinating to me because it's really helped me be very present and attend to what signals my body has been sending. And, of course, it's been a stellar experience in helping provide incrementally bigger gaps between my thoughts. So nice.

Anyway, this week I'm sharing a bit about how you might find your own version of what healthy habits might support your inside state and how to make them flexible enough to be able to be consistent at them.

✴ ✴ Using your voice to establish boundaries - new blog post ✴ ✴
[ blog link in bio 🔝 or head over to our website 🌐]

We often think about boundaries as some kind of external thing - a structure between ourselves and others. Well, this week I explore how important it is to fully understand (and organise) the boundaries we have on the inside...with OURSELVES...before we go anywhere near trying to put boundaries in place with others.

This can be a bit to wrap your head around, but honestly, if we can get the inside stuff happening, we have a much easier time when it comes to those external boundaries.

And it's also a gentle reminder that we can be really very good at pushing stuff onto others, when if we can take a vulnerable moment to get into the messy feelings we hold in the dark edges of ourselves, we often find that there are some things to resolve.

✴ ✴ Learning to use your voice - new blog post ✴ ✴
[ blog link in bio 🔝 or head over to our website 🌐]

It's really hard when you know that you've got pain in your heart, in your story, in your body and in your memories that needs to be healed, explored, worked through.

It's harder still when you've been alone with that pain for so long, but you've finally found someone to journey with you as you begin to lift the lid on all that's there.

And then you have to learn to speak about it. To share it. And then in the healing of it, to speak about yourself differently. To speak up about boundaries being crossed.

Learning to speak up and use our voice after trauma can be yet another painful and challenging part of trauma recovery / healing...and sometimes we need to get creative!

🔸🔸 Starting 2025 with this energy...🔸🔸

I'm moving slowly and intentionally as I return to work / research / life this January. That might be related to having spent a lot of time on a yoga mat over the holidays where I've been purposeful in my desire to strengthen my somatic (body) noticings. And it turns out it's a lot easier to do that when you go slowly...which for those of you who know me, is not my natural pace.

Turns out it's a pretty wise piece of insight (I know, all the yogi's out there are a like "really, Thea?!" but better late than never is what I always say 😉)

Anyway, I've also been reflecting on that perspective when it comes to showing up here in social media and I've decided to go slowly and intentionally here too so that might look like fewer posts, it might look like more words / videos / observations / sharings that go deeper but not so frequently...but it might not. I'm not sure yet.

Because I'm taking it slowly. Or at least I'm trying to.

Kicking off 2025 with a little bit of reflective energy, which for those of you who have been with me for a while now will know is how I like to spend the endings and beginnings. If you want a little sense of what that's looked like for me, have a read.

It's good to be back.
