What does the Gamma Knife procedure actually look and feel like?

Once the frame or mask is fitted, the personalised treatment plan is finalised and all safety checks are complete, treatment begins.

The procedure is similar to having a scan. The patient lies comfortably while their head is supported with a frame or mask — essential for delivering precise, targeted care. Some stay awake throughout; others find the experience calming enough to fall asleep.

The clinical team is in continuous contact with the patient via audio and video, and breaks can be taken at any point to support comfort.

After treatment, the patient stays for a short period of observation. If all is well, they are able to go home the same day.

Medical imaging is an essential — yet often emotionally charged — part of the treatment journey. Many patients experience what’s known as scanxiety: the fear or stress associated with upcoming scans and awaiting results.

We believe that patient education and emotional support are as important as clinical excellence. Here are a few simple ways to make the experience easier:

✅ Understand the process – Knowing what the scan involves can help reduce fear.
✅ Ask questions – Write things down or record your appointment if helpful.
✅ Manage your anxiety – Music, mindfulness, or mild sedation can all make a difference.
✅ Lean on support – Talking to others who’ve been through it can be a great comfort.

Every scan is a step toward clarity — and we’re here to support you through it.

At Amethyst, we are committed to widening access to high-quality radiotherapy treatment. One of the most powerful ways to achieve this is through close collaboration with public healthcare systems.

In a time of rapid medical advancement, and growing demands on the national healthcare services, Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) offer a valuable path forward. By working together, we can ensure that all patients receive timely and equal access to the best available care.

By combining the NHS’s clinical excellence and trusted infrastructure with the innovation, technology, and investment of private providers, we’re helping shape a healthcare system that is equipped to meet the demands of modern clinical practice.

Defining the target is essential for the safe and effective delivery of Gamma Knife radiosurgery.

Using advanced imaging, we create a detailed map of your brain while you’re comfortably positioned in a head frame or mask. These high-resolution images guide your personalised treatment plan. They pinpoint the exact location of the lesion, allowing us to deliver a precise radiation dose while minimising impact on healthy brain tissue.

Each Gamma Knife plan is uniquely tailored by our multidisciplinary team - including a consultant neurosurgeon, neuro-radiologist, and medical physicist - who collaborate to determine the optimal configuration of radiation beams.

Today marks World Brain Day 🧠 with the theme: Brain Health for All Ages. It’s a powerful reminder that neurological conditions can affect anyone, regardless of age.

Early recognition and timely care are essential to improving outcomes and preserving quality of life. Knowing the signs and acting quickly can make all the difference.

If you or someone close to you is experiencing persistent or unusual neurological symptoms, please consult a healthcare professional without delay.

At Amethyst Radiotherapy UK, we proudly support patients facing brain tumours. Our advanced, non-invasive radiotherapy techniques deliver precise, effective, and compassionate care — placing safety and patient wellbeing at the heart of every treatment.

Alongside advanced treatments like Gamma Knife radiosurgery, nutrition plays a crucial role in helping patients recover more effectively and maintain a sense of control throughout their treatment journey.

A balanced diet can:
✔ Strengthen the immune system after treatment
✔ Help manage fatigue, nausea, and appetite changes
✔ Support healing from treatment side effects
✔ Lower the risk of additional health issues like heart disease or diabetes

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to eating well — everyone’s needs are different. What matters most is staying nourished, hydrated, and well-informed.

Even small steps, like eating regularly, choosing whole foods, or getting support with meal preparation, can make a meaningful difference.

If you or someone you care for is undergoing treatment for a brain tumour, speak with your care team or a dietitian.

It’s often the small details that make a big difference in patient care.

Clear explanations. Space to ask questions. A calm, respectful environment. When patients feel truly seen and heard, it builds confidence in every step of their treatment.

We’re proud of the way our team consistently creates this kind of experience — through thoughtful, attentive care every day.

Immobilisation is key to the precision of Gamma Knife treatment.

To deliver focused radiation with sub-millimetre accuracy, patients are fitted with either a stereotactic head frame or a custom-made mask.

This ensures complete head stillness during imaging and treatment - allowing clinicians to target the area with exceptional precision while minimising impact on healthy brain tissue.

Whether a frame or mask is right for you will be discussed during your outpatient consultation with the neurosurgical team.

How is Gamma Knife different from other radiosurgery devices?

Gamma Knife offers a highly focused approach to treating brain conditions, delivering targeted therapy while helping to preserve surrounding healthy tissue. Its design ensures minimal radiation exposure beyond the intended treatment area.

This level of precision makes Gamma Knife a trusted tool in modern neuro-oncology — effective for a wide range of brain conditions, from functional disorders to tumours.
