🔹 What does “non-invasive” mean in medicine?

In medical terminology, a non-invasive procedure is one that doesn’t involve cutting the skin or inserting instruments into the body. This can be contrasted with invasive procedures - like traditional brain surgery - where the skull is opened and direct access to the brain is required. While effective in some cases, invasive surgery carries significant risks and involves long recovery times.

But there are alternatives. Advanced treatment options such as radiotherapy and Gamma Knife radiosurgery are considered non-invasive. They deliver powerful, targeted treatment without any cutting or physical intrusion into the head or neck.

For patients, this often means reduced risks, no surgical scars, and a faster return to normal life.

đź’ˇ At the heart of Gamma Knife radiosurgery is extraordinary precision.

The system uses 192 sources of cobalt-60 to deliver tiny beams of radiation. Each individual beam is too weak to cause damage, but when all are focused together on the target, they create a powerful treatment effect.

Because Gamma Knife treatment is so accurate, it minimises radiation exposure to healthy brain tissue. It also means that patients can usually complete their treatment in a single session, unlike conventional radiotherapy which often requires multiple visits.

The radiation damages the DNA of abnormal cells so they can no longer reproduce, while leaving normal tissue intact. Over time, this leads to the gradual elimination of the targeted abnormality.

Raspberry Cavernoma Awareness Day 🧠
Cavernomas are clusters of abnormal blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord, often appearing like a raspberry on medical scans.

🔎 Prevalence
✔️ Around 1 in 600 people has an asymptomatic cavernoma – that’s about 90,000 people in the UK, enough to fill Wembley Stadium.
✔️ Symptomatic cavernomas are much rarer, with around 160 people diagnosed each year, most often between the ages of 20 and 40.

⚠️ Possible first symptoms may include:
✔️ Seizures
✔️ Haemorrhage (bleeding)
✔️ Neurological changes such as blurred vision, limb weakness or balance difficulties

For suitable patients, Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery provides a non-invasive, highly targeted therapy designed to treat cavernomas with precision while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.

đź’ˇ If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a cavernoma, our expert team is here to provide guidance and support on whether Gamma Knife treatment may be appropriate.

Across the UK, demand for radiotherapy continues to grow - yet too many patients still face barriers to timely access. Expanding capacity is vital to ensure that every individual receives the care they need, when they need it most.

On 1st October at the Cancer Care Conference (CCC) in London, our CEO, Sasha Burns, will join the panel on “Building capacity in radiotherapy to meet demand.” The discussion will explore practical strategies to strengthen services, invest in innovation, and deliver sustainable improvements in cancer outcomes.

The Children’s Gamma Knife Centre is a pioneering collaboration between Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity , UCLH - University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and the Queen Square Radiosurgery Centre.

Uniquely, it is the only UK service dedicated solely to stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for children, led by Mr Greg James and Mr Neil Kitchen.

At CGKC, families benefit from the combined expertise of two world-leading hospitals. Care is designed around children’s needs:

đź”· Joint consultations at GOSH bring together specialists to guide treatment decisions
đź”· Dedicated play specialists and paediatric teams support children throughout
đź”· Procedures take place under general anaesthetic for comfort and safety
đź”· Recovery happens back at GOSH, close to family, in a child-focused environment

This partnership brings together cutting-edge technology and compassionate, family-centred care - ensuring children receive the safest and most effective treatment possible.
